'Offensive' Humor

You know those jokes that you find funny, but are completely ashamed to have laughed at? This is one of them. If you laugh at this, you're going straight to hell.

What did the deaf, dumb and blind kid get for Christmas?

Cancer.

Will the Parisian bars be handing out free shots this new year's eve?

Haha.

Nothing wrong with laughing at offensive jokes so long as you're happy to take it when it's about you as well.

I laugh at jokes made about me and my background and make some myself as well.

Puts us all on the same level. When people start getting offended, its them trying to raise themselves above you.

I think the "offense is taken not given" trope is a blaise way of excusing someone for being a dick.

Harm is not always physical harm. There is bullying, psychological abuse. So yes words can cause harm.

If a child of mine was abused and murdered by a pedophile and someone made specific jokes about it....then yeah that is hugely offensive. However jokes which are not specific to a personal circumstance or person i wouldn't have a problem with.

Its not about taking offense or not taking offense imho. An attack on someone is still an attack. Doesn't need to be physical to cause harm.

I think context is important... I think jokes about race, religion etc.. can be very funny.

I think simply jokes intended to hurt or dehuminise people aren't very funny.

The difference sometimes can simply be context, intent etc.. taboo subjects can be funny simply because they are taboo, some jokes parody say racism or play on a stereotype but at another level etc.. Others are just outright attacks on a particular group at face value and not particularly funny.

The happy merchant meme from 4chan for example at face value is a grossly antisemetic meme reminiscent of Nazi propaganda - on the other hand when someone puts it on a customised credit card with a backdrop of gold coins causing much embarrassment and bad PR for the issuing bank it can be quite amusing:

in that instance I doubt they're trying to promote anti semetism but rather are just causing mischief and using a taboo subject to do so

Yea but there's a difference between freedom of speech and bullying/harrasment isn't there.

The point is really about people saying things others don't like and someone goes "im offended by that"

ok and?

I did an audience participation line at The Rocky Horror Picture Show's 40th birthday at the Albert Hall a couple of weeks ago that got a good reaction on both sides.

Frank N. Furter says on screen "And my children turn on me"
I shout "That's what Rolf Harris said!"

Half the people around laughed and the other half went oooooooooh...

Mission accomplished. :D
