Make sure you delete "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead" instead of just deleting it from in Steam.

Have you checked your HDDs, RAM and CPU for any dodgy behaviour? Sounds kind of like a dubious overclock or a failing hard drive to me.
Tbh i think your right, got a feeling my HDD is failing. Everytime i start windows it find errors. Guess ill test it then RMA it

Now it gets even more frustrating, Move everything across to a spare HDD, play a whole game of death toll fine. Start playing another alls fine, then lose connection try to re join and my map differs. Wtf i was on the map 10 seconds before and everything was fine. Could faulty RAM cause this?

Try memtest and prime95. Test both ram and cpu.
looks like memory, Its unlikely for both cores to error at once even with overheating, do other source based games run fine?
another possibility is the motherboard but I would expect to see crashes and other weird things even in windows.
try a small fft test see if it lasts longer.

L4d is the only game i play at the minute, only running a geforce6500 so havent bother redownloading any other games.
Have been have a few random lockups out of game. Small Fft has been running fine. Ill leave it overnight to see if it brings up any errors.
Hopefully its the RAM, lifetime warranty with geil. Anyone now what they are like for RMA's?

Lols at the game last night, 4 of us against publics (Midnight, Kearney, Fish and myself) and Midnight comes up with a classic 'game leveler' against the publics who are pretty much dieing right out of the safe room (apart from when Coxy joined of course 
) whereby we all proceeded to switch to 'reverse mouse' in the options menu under keyboard/mouse controls.
After a couple of minutes...... we manage to stumble out of the safe room, get immediately attacked by a boomer and proceed to either shoot at the floor or the ceiling in an attempt to rescue midnight from a smoker no one can seem to get to
I've not laughed so hard in ages.
Of course the game was rife with RQ, i.e. new opposing team every couple of minutes but still, it was a good laugh.

Memtest86+ is about still, don't try the older Memtest86 with more than 4GB RAM however or it will force restart the computer constantly. Therefore make sure you get Memtest86+
Have you tried overclocking your computer at all Repta? If so revert it back to stock and see what happens...
