Offical OcUK GTX1060 review thread

It looks like it's taking on the 980 more than the 970 judging by the TPU review. Looks pretty damn good to me.
As for the price, sure maybe it should be cheaper, but the 10 series is all over the shop at the moment, I'm not surprised. I wouldn't pay more than £250 for this card.

So I have read much of this thread (some of it makes no sense to me as a complete Gaming PC newbie) and am still unsure, whether I should be buying the RX480 or the GTX1060....

What exactly is the verdict? I was waiting for the 1060 to come out, but now I am not so sure? Or am I missing your point(s)?

It depends on the rest of your system, on how long you plan to keep the GPU/upgrade thoughts, on how much you value CS&Warranty duration, and how much you have to spend, and especially what games you play and how important each one is. If you tell us that we can help you with a recommendation.

Well, it's not for me, it's for my son.

It depends on the rest of your system
It is a new build.
Skylake i5 6500 3.2
Asus H110M-A Motherbaord
8GB RAM
Corsair cx500

on how long you plan to keep the GPU/upgrade
He plans to keep it for some considerable time, given its considerable cost. Why would he be thinking about changing it before he has even bought it?

on how much you value CS&Warranty duration
Are the CS and warranty experiences starkly different on the two products then?
Are the warranty lengths different?

how much you have to spend,
Assume he can afford either. As I said, the 1060 was the planned option, but now not so sure.

what games you play and how important each one is.
I don't know particularly what he plays.. Just Cause 3 was one of the latest titles he bought, and Unturned.

This is a new build with a budget of about £600.

What monitor(s) are you using, what resolution(s) and what connector type(s) (eg Display Port or DVI)?

What's your system like - CPU, RAM etc?

How important are things like heat, noise and power draw to your overall system?

What sort of games do you like to play now and what games would you like to be playing in the future, are there any titles you're waiting for?

Edit: just seen your responses to some of this above. The monitor question is an important one though. What resolution (1080p?) and what connector type does the monitor use (DP, HDMI or DVI)?

All he wants to know is what to go for:p

If you have any prefererene to AMD/Nvidia pick that one, if it's based on cost pick that one, apart from that flick a coin tbh.

(Hopefully) quick question or two: currently have a 670 GTX (Gigabyte Windforce) on a 3570K, mostly running 1080p, though occasionally 5760 x 1080 (Elite and/or Skyrim, which it runs pretty well). Card can get a bit noisy and certainly pushes out the heat.

What real world performance difference will I see going from a 670 to a 1060?

Will the fact it runs on 120W vs 180W make a big heat difference?

(And given the 670 is now 4 years old, finding any sort of comparison chart that shows both the 670 and the 1060 has been tricky).

It is a BenQ GL2450 1080p, via HDMI.

Any of the RX 480s or 1060s are fine then. Reason for asking is that the reference RX 480s don't have a DVI connector.

That monitor is 60Hz, so you only need to achieve an average framerate of 60 fps to cap it out.

To be frank, any RX 480 or 1060 is going to easily manage 60 fps @ 1080p in all current games and most future titles. From reviews, the 1060 seems to have the edge in DX11 games, the RX 480 seems to have the edge in DX12 games, so might be a better bet moving forwards. But the 1060 runs cooler, quieter and draws less power, so that might be an influencing factor.

Alternatively, save some money and have a look at the soon to be released RX 470 which is aimed firmly at the 1080p @ 60 fps market. Or pick up a GTX 960 or 970 if you find one going cheap (currently the prices haven't dropped as much as they should on these though).

Because there is a mix of people who buy GPUs - you have the enthusiasts who buy new pretty much every generation, going for the incremental upgrades and happy to keep on top of the increasing demands of new games.

And then you have those who just want something to game on for the next 3-5 years and aren't that worried about an incremental drop in performance as new games become more demanding, happy to reduce settings to keep frame rates up and sacrifice image quality for a bit more longevity.

If it's for your son then I'd suggest just going with the 480, it has more VRAM and AMD drivers tend to improve over time so the drop off will be less noticeable so it has more potential to last him longer.

Based on what you've said I would go with the 1060. Reason being that it has better vendor options (EVGA where you can buy extra warranty for £10 for 2 years, to a total of 5, and has impeccable CS), it will boost very high by itself so there's no tinkering you have to do, it's a cool & quiet card, and is cheaper than other comparable ones. Only problem? Not here yet until 10th of August afaik.

I'm debating a 1060. Purely because I'm bored of waiting for the 480 nitro, with no idea when I might be able to pick one up.

For right now, the 1060 looks like a smarter choice. For me, editing video (a recent thing), it looks like it 'may' be a better choice to have the 480 though. However I am only an amateur and infrequent video guy, so it might not really matter as long as it works.

I was looking at the Asus STRIX 1060 OC, but that is 329. Stuff that... no way. It is the only damn card available at present though (apart from a 'mini' card which I am not buying).

If I was to buy a 1060 over the 480 it would be the EVGA SC, alas that's also not available yet :\

I bought one and got it last Friday. Great card, runs between 60-65C gaming with fan around 1000rpm which is really quiet. Really liking it so far but its my first GPU so got nothing to compare it to.

The 1060 or the 480? Where'd you pick up the evga SC from if so??

What about the OcUK GeForce GTX 1060 "Reference Design" 6144MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card at £229? Is this no good?
