Office 2010 Public Beta

I've found Outlook 2003 to be unbearably slow with GMail IMAP connections, but with Thunderbird it is superb. Although I've found Outlook 2007 to be a lot better.

Just installed it, opened up Word and it crashed immediately, tried opening it again several times succesfully but doing anything in Word eg. Saving, minimising makes it crash, excel and outlook are working brilliantly though. :S
Pretty upset, as I haven't got my 2007 disks with me and need to do write some reports.

I'll carry on adding to my list when i spot good/bad things

GOOD -

I like the look for word and excel, the file button is better. In terms of it saying things like 'File' instead of a stupid round logo button that doesnt say anything.

Outlook out of office notification is now a visible bar accross the top of the screen

BAD -

Install took quite a while running on a clean laptop.

Send a smile and send a frown?? I hope bill gates was smoking crack when he thought this up! Removed instantly, presumably this will be removed or at least the option to not install it in full release.

Does not pick up the group policies from the office 2007 admin template. (This was expected)

In outlook i have view > arrange by > show in groups set to off. I cannot find where it is in 2010.
When i changed the view then pressed 'reset view' the computer fans kicked in and it grinded to a halt. *** I have now found this, its under view > view settings > group by > untick the box ***

When i open an email i cannot print the message. Before i opened the message, when the the file (logo) button then print. If i do this now the print button is greyed out completely. This will annoy a LOT of people if they cant print messages

The minimise, restore and close buttons look a bit unprofessional, im not sure really why but they just do.

i think you're the one smoking crack. bill gates retired ages ago. and the send a smile/frown is to report the problems you've found because it's a BETA. the whole point of them releasing public betas is so they can get as much feedback as possible to make improvements/fixes for the final version.

Should have thought of that before running a BETA!

In what way? They look exactly the same as every other window on my computer...

They didn't need to have an application that puts two icons in your system tray either.

They did it right in Windows 7 BETA by having a button at the top of each window. No big deal to me [as they're hidden], but I suspect the majority of the people who will run the 2010 BETA are exactly the kind of people who will remove the send a smile/frown app. :)

I can't get outlook to connect to my googlemail account :(

Any ideas?

I had to uncheck the following option to get my Gmail account working:

Couldn't be bothered to find out the reasons why, I might look into it another day.

I've had one crash with Publisher so far, but you really shouldn't have let yourself get caught out - it is a beta after all and you should never rely on it to do real work.

I actually thought the "Office button" (as I called it) was quite consistent with the new Start button in Windows 7 but accept that it needed to change with the new "backstage" feature.

As for the smiley icons, it would have been nice to opt-in during install but it’s pretty trivial to get rid of with add/remove programs. Maybe the old feedback method was underused and they decided they needed something more prominent.

Can't see them anyway on 7.

I'm liking what I've tried so far, everything does seem to open and respond faster in general. I'll have a more thorough look tomorrow.

Thanks, I'll try that.

Another Q, do you guys who have Gmail accounts bother using the webmail anymore? Or just Outlook express?, unless you're away from home of course.

Hardly ever. A mail client on the desktop (be it Outlook or Thunderbird) and on the move my iPhone picks 'em up.
