Office getting our Macs today...

It's perfectly possible to work in a team while also having a clearly defined personal desk. And get off wifi, stat.

What else is on the network, or does the Time Capsule handle everything from mirroring of local disks to internet sharing?

What do you do for backups?

I'd seriously reconsider running all those machines off Wi-Fi :(

It sounds bad but we only have 6 computers at the minute, and each will rarely be using the internet other than uploading/downloading the source code via SVN every once in a while. If the site grows, which it most likely will, we will move to a bigger office anyway, then we can get cabling/server.

Surely the topic was about his work setup? Would you rather have discussion about best practises for handling IT in an office environment, or 3 pages of "omg that looks cool can I have one"?

It's a discussion forum, not a high-fives-all-round forum.

As I said WiFi is fine for now.

Time Capsule isn't used for anything other than WiFi and connecting a few other things via Ethernet ports.

We have a managed server hosted with Rackspace and we pay a LOT of money for it. It automatically backs up the files from there. Then we have the SVN downloads to each computer, so if the server dies we still have files on each computer. And if the server dies and the office blows up, we still will have a backup copy at home as I usually do some work each night.

Cool, at least you aren't relying on Time Capsule for backup :p

Did you go IP with your phones as well or is that Mitel (I think) handset in your photo the system you're on at the moment? What's it like working with an SVN repository hosted off-site over the internets?

Wouldn't dare rely on Time Capsule! :D Would be a bad idea.

Yup, VoIP. Vontage I think it's with. Got a Skype Phone too I think. Not sure.

SVN is fine. Can be a bit of a hassle sometimes but It's a lot better than using FTP like we used at the start. SVN is a life-saver to us now. Probably better options out there though.

I thought it was a little unusual to, espically for a programmer, I've never seen an workplace like that before. It looks more like a meeting room or classroom.

It looks pretty much like training room setups that I've had to do many times before, single desk, with the trainer at one end and systems all around.

I personally don't think the desks are tiny. There is lots of space around the computer.

We don't want 'closed' in desks either because this isn't exactly good working conditions when your working in a team. We want people to work together, not be alone in their own little space while they dase off while watch Youtube videos.

No drawers, no personal space, nowhere to pin things, nowhere to store anything, screens are too close, chairs look too low (for good working conditions your eyeline should be level with the top of the screen). I'd absolutely hate to be in an environment like that. I work in an office where everyone is in a team but we have a decent bit of personal space and some privacy.

Stop bitching about his work set up.

Keep this thread on topic.

Get off your high horse, it's on topic.

Top of the iMac is lined with my eyes. I made sure that was fine.

We have chests of drawers but decided not to use them. Clutters the place and for no good reason. Can't see me ever needing one. IF we ever do we have access to them.

You also need a plant.
We bought 2 today :)
