Well, I had an email from a confused would-be client this morning, so I thought I'd have some fun with my reply. I thought I'd share it in case anyone else finds it vaguely amusing. I work in recruitment advertising btw.

If that's too small for your hi-res monitor, I've stuck the text in below.

Hi Ashley,

I tried to call you this morning, but it was 4AM where you are and I forgot about the time difference. I had a look and there’s a Manchester near you in GA, so I presume there’s been a bit of a mix-up, because you’ve contacted the Manchester Evening News in Manchester, England. We’re happy to place your ad, but I feel the response would be better if you mentioned that the commute would be about 521hrs each way (according to google maps). I would recommend a full page advert to attract the few people who might be willing to relocate that distance, and we can do that for £19,890 + VAT, which is nearly the distance in miles google maps’ suggested route is.

Let me know if you have any queries, you can reach us on the number in my email signature, although we are only open until 5:30pm Greenwich Mean Time.

Kind regards,

Dev

I know, in retrospect it was more random image thread material. *self flagellates furiously*

And yes, £20k gets you a full page recruitment ad. So when you see one and apply to that job, they've spent a buttload and want someone epic.

so you tried to put an advert in the wrong newspaper

They emailed to put an ad in our paper, but they are in Georgia, USA. Near Manchester GA in fact, so they failed at googling their local paper. I replied with dry British humour (well, I thought I did :p). I'm hoping for a reply, but her colleague said she wouldn't be in the office until 9AM, which is a few hours away.

Amused me anyway! Post their reply back! Although I don't think it will be that amusing... :( Just a simple "Oops, sorry" or something.

You can navigate the globe in less than 521 hours, its probably more like 15 hours :p

I did originally write 8 hrs (rough travel time by plane), but I figured Google's estimate was more amusing in its extremity. It suggested driving across Russia, getting a ferry to Hawaii, then Alaska, then across the states to GA. Surely there's a Ferry from UK to the East coast?

Is 5:30pm GMT right? we're currently on summer time in Europe so 5:30pm GMT is 6:30pm BST ;) if you actually work until 18:30 I stand corrected, I just assumed normal office hours are 9:00-17:30 :)

I would never ever pay that much for a recruitment Ad!!! Your clients must be desperate!

In fact, I paid less than that for an ad in the FT!

Amusing until you get sacked for bringing the company into disrepute.

Then it is just amusing for everyone apart from you.

Let us know the reply!
