***** Official 2016 BBQ Thread - Chucking it Down: Proper British BBQ Weather *****

There's a few people that have picked one up on the BBQ group I'm in. Not sure I'd bother personally but that's not because I think they'll be bad - more than you can get good results with your home oven if you use a cast iron pan/pizza steel and the grill :)

It was more its ability to smoke and BBQ too. Pizza oven wasn't the main draw. Think i'll just stick with getting a ProQ Frontier as I was originally planning on getting.

I imagine a ProQ Frontier will be leaps and bounds ahead of this for BBQ. You can still cook pizza on the Frontier with a decent stone too (though as I say, I think BBQ pizza is a bit of a gimmick).

That's what I was thinking. Plus the ProQ Frontier is on offer atm for £178.............think I may have to slap an order in!

I just bought the ProQ. I have been looking for a new BBQ was going to go for the Weber Master touch one, but thought this one was a better deal hopefully the build quality is as good as the Weber.

Just ordered the Slow n Sear so will be having fun with that over the weekend I hope, my prize BBQ got delivered today so a decision has to be made but having it all shiny and new in the box is one heck of a draw to keeping it!

Nice one, mine arrived last week but not had a chance to use in anger yet. It does seem decently made though and glad I didn't wait.
Wish the sun would come back though!

Has anyone tried the "new" Weber premium briquettes? I bought some last week and gave them a whirl yesterday for an 8 hour pork shoulder. Very disappointing results, the are larger, don't burn for as long and produce a LOT of ash. The increase in size means you can't get so many around the perimeter of a kettle, hence the "snake" doesn't last as long, coupled with the actual briquettes burning for less time.

I'll be on the look out for a replacement brand now as these are rubbish...

Can anyone recommend alternatives?

N.b. Weber have discontinued the old style premium briquettes that came in a white bag :(

I've not tried them but I wasn't super impressed by the old ones to be honest.

Lots of people swear by Aussie heat beads, Big K and the coco shell things. Personally they're much of a muchness imo.

I have used the new Weber ones and really like them - did a snake 2 wide + 2 high and worked a treat for 8 hours, people say they burn hotter than the old ones and while I had some vent playing I could pretty easily keep them around 225f

My other long cook was with Heatbeads and they worked brilliantly, so expensive tho - between the two I couldn't really pick a winner - the Weber got going easier and maintained temp but probably did use more where the beads were harder to get going and up to temp but did look to last longer.

Having tried some Big K briquettes yesterday I wouldn't bother, they smoked like nothing I have ever seen in the chimney and did so for a long time even prompting the neighbour to come round....

I have used a bag of Aldi briquettes and quite liked them, super cheap so picked up 5 bags on Thursday - my Slow n Sear turned up also so looking forward to testing it with a nice shoulder of lamb!

How uniform are the briquettes from Aldi? How long do they burn for? Might go and grab some if they're worth it :)

They are uniform, nearer the size of heatbeads than the weber ones (so poss more like the old ones, not used so couldn't say exactly)

I only really used them to play with temp and maverick setup but they seemed to last well and burn pretty slow. I used them more for hot and fast stuff tbh so couldn't reliably compare them but very cheap and liked on another forum I use.

On the BBQ Facebook group I'm part of someone posted their experiments with Aldi briquettes recently and said that they'd had good results. They don't last absolutely ages but given the price they're very economical (and don't require *that* much more baby sitting).

Is that the British BBQ society?

If so time to work out who you are on there ;)

I'd be really interested to see how long you get out of a full slow n sear with the aldi briquettes as my old style weber ones won't last long and it would make for readily available ones whenever I needed.

I put a pork butt on at midnight last night. It's getting close to being done at 10:30am. My thermometer didn't wake me up at all so I think the grill stayed between 215-235F all night. Can't argue with that.

My brother had some of the Weber briquettes n said that they were pretty terrible. I won't be in a hurry to get any

Aldi ones aren't readily available unfortunately - I bought a bag when I saw them in there and when I went back for more a week or so later nowhere to be seen, they are only back now as part of last Thursdays deal.

What have you done on the slow n sear out of interest, shoulder of lamb will likely be my first but not sure what briquettes I will use as have a bag of Weber, Heatbeads & Big K open - not sure if any of them have a full chimneys worth!!

Bought our first "proper" bbq yesterday so today we tested it. I made some bbq ribs. Boiled the ribs for 3 - 4 hours in few litres of water + can of beer and then added some bbq sauce (shop bough, was lazy) when it went on the bbq. It was awesome and not too much bbq sauce which I like.
Also marinated some steaks with thyme and garlic but they overcooked a bit as the bbq was so hot (took about 2 - 3 mins and they were overcooked). They were still good but I prefer pork so ribs win.

We were going to have new potatoes and some sausages too but decided that we had enough with the 2 meats and salads. Stuffed now.

Got some left over ribs now which I am going to have for supper! :D
