If I understand.. . Sprint race is now discrete? If you crash in sprint it now no longer affects the main race?

This is a good thing imo. Allows more daring moves and more last lap safety cars/red flags!

Well - it'll still potentially affect your main race if you absolutely smash your car to pieces and your team spend all night trying to rebuild it. (And I think repair costs are still counted in budget cap, so you also don't want your drivers costing you money for minimal championship benefit)

The other perspective is that now it doesn't affect your main race in terms of positioning etc. and the points being dished out aren't particularly big, I don't think we'll see as many people going for it. If you end up at the back of the Sprint grid, there's not really any reward/incentive to do what Lewis did in Sao Paolo before and rip your way to the front, as it won't benefit your main race, you'll risk crashes, you'll put wear on the engine and chances are you won't reach the (meagre) points paying positions either.

I think this places a lot more reliance on the drivers just wanting to race and hoping the teams don't reign them in too much, as the rewards don't seem particularly good vs the risks now.

Except with the budget caps and the non-existent points, why are teams or drivers going to risk it? I bet every single team dials their engine down and lap times are no where near quali or full race pace.

If that does happen, I reckon we'll see mid-table teams running theirs at full power. The points might not be worth the risk to the likes of Max, but if you're mostly running in 9-12th then boosting yourself up to the lower end of the Sprint points is well worth it.

So basically a way of giving the viewer less actual session time. The sprints previously replaced one of the practice sessions and yet didn't last an hour. Remember we already lost an hour of practice anyway during the change from 90 to 60 mins. Now with the new sprint qualifying web also lose another 60min session and instead get 30mins of a Sesson and 30mins of breaks (very American).

If the Sprint race does not affect the main Race then run it in reverse championship order.
Was thinking the same thing.

They are determined to make the sprint races a big thing. Sadly. So why not have:
Friday - FP1, FP2
Saturday - Race Quali, Sprint Race (in reverse championship order)
Sunday - Race

They want to make it entertaining and have lots of overtaking, then have the fastest cars at the back.

Hamilton has a brake problem, and hasn't managed a lap yet (edit: fixed now). Tsunoda spins and hits the wall but keeps going with the tyre barely attached.

And now Gasly is on fire! Hope the race is as eventful as free practice! And KMag's rear suspension has broken. I assume he slapped the wall but I haven't seen any replay.
