Monza

When was the track built?

Constructed in just 110 days in 1922, the Autodromo Nazionale Monza was the world’s third purpose-built race track, coming after Brooklands in the UK and Indianapolis in the US. Like those two tracks, the original circuit featured a daunting series of banked curves, as well as much of the ‘outfield’ section that’s still in use today.

When was its first Grand Prix?

Monza opened its doors on September 3 1922, just a week before it hosted that year’s Italian Grand Prix. It was then part of the original Formula 1 calendar in 1950, and has held the Italian Grand Prix every year bar one since.

What’s the circuit like?

Rapido! Formula 1’s fastest ever lap was set at Monza – Williams driver Juan Pablo Montoya’s 260.6km/h effort during practice for the 2004 Grand Prix – which should give you some idea of the nature of the track the locals call ‘La Pista Magica’. Cars are on full throttle for 80% of the lap, and hit their Vmax on the circuit’s 1.1km start/finish straight. From there, they roar off into the historic park section, where a series of big stops into tight chicanes give the brakes a good workout.

Why go?

The parkland setting of Monza, located just to the north east of Italy’s fashion capital Milan, makes for a relaxed, leafy setting for a Grand Prix, while the preserved Monza banking – spot it in the background as the cars exit the Parabolica, as well as on the flyover bridge they pass under en route to the Variante Ascari – leaves you in no doubt that you’re in the presence of a very special race track.

Where is the best place to watch?

Aim for the grandstand at the Variante del Rettifilo to witness the awesome spectacle of cars braking from around 350km/h to just 70km/h before negotiating the tight chicane. This is also one of the track’s best overtaking spots, as well as a magnet for first-lap tussles.

Just a reminder, but consider it a warning - can we not have any further derogatory name calling of drivers, team bosses and the like. We don't expect you to like every driver/team, but at least keep comments respectful.

If you don't follow this warning, you will lose access to the race thread and the thread for the following race as well.

This includes but is not limited to such terms including Lulu, Crashstappen, Karen Horner, Whingey Spice etc.

Thanks for the thread, @chrismscotland :)

Max/RB's chance to set a new record for the number of consecutive wins. You wouldn't bet against them making it, would you? Any word on Dani Ric's return yet? I'm assuming Lawson is in again for this one?

I think Lawson got confirmed on the Monday after the Dutch GP, including all races until Danny Ric is fit to return.

On the subject of Monza, I've always enjoyed the Italian GP. I think it's just the pure speed of it.

I went in 2018 with a friend, with a General Access ticket and stayed in a hostel in Milan. The love for Ferrari there and the Tifosi is insane, but a large number of fans left as soon as Lewis overtook Kimi with a few laps to go. Also the racial abuse Lewis recieved on the podium (We got onto the track for the podium) was rather unsettling.

The event and track itself was fantastic to attend, Monza is one of the first rail stops out of Milan and on race day every train leaving Milan Central Station stops at Monza so all fans can get to the track easily.

You can walk the entireity of the inside of the track with a GA ticket which made for some fantastic views, we ended up watching the race from the inside of the exit of Parabolica, which meant we could see the start/finish line, the entry to the pits, the cars at a decent speed and also had a large screen TV opposite the track facing us so we could see everything else.

*Edit*

Infact on second glance at the OP title image, that's the 2018 race :p

I thought it would be nice for the Ferrari fans to get a glimpse of both red cars at the front for once!

Think I probably posted this in the 2018 Monza thread, but OcUK had the Sim Deal with F1 at the time for the Fan Zones which had F1 2018 playing and you could do hotlaps at the track.
