When was the track built?

The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya was built as part of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics development programme. The foundation stone was laid in 1989, while the first car race was a round of the 1991 Spanish Touring Car Championship.

When was its first Grand Prix?

Two weeks after the touring cars raced at Barcelona, it was Formula 1’s turn. The track enjoyed a sensational debut, with Nigel Mansell and Ayrton Senna’s famous eyeball-to-eyeball drag race down the straight, before Mansell took the lead and drove on to victory.

What’s the circuit like?

The drivers love the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, which is just as well, as they have traditionally spent huge amounts of time pounding around it during winter testing. The track is a good mix of high- and low-speed corners, with the challenging Turn 3 right-hander a great chance to evaluate the balance of the car your team’s designers have given you to fight with for the season.

Why go?

You don’t need us to tell you that Barcelona is one of the world’s great cities, even if we just sort of did. Food, culture, beaches – it’s all there, making a Spanish Grand Prix holiday a properly attractive proposition.

Just a reminder, but consider it a warning - can we not have any further derogatory name calling of drivers, team bosses and the like. We don't expect you to like every driver/team, but at least keep comments respectful.

If you don't follow this warning, you will lose access to the race thread and the thread for the following race as well.

This includes but is not limited to such terms including Lulu, Crashstappen, Karen Horner, Whingey Spice etc.

Woohoo, only Monaco could make the prospect of Barcelona exciting :p

They've changed the layout for this year haven't they, removing the mickey mouse chicane at the end of the lap? Not sure it'll do much for the racing but it'll look better at least.

Thank god the old last corner is back, I've always hated that stupid little chicane they put in (its also a nightmare in F1 games!!)

Will allow Verstappen to set up for a drs launch on the whole grid should he find bad luck in qualifying.

Was wondering if the mickey mouse chicane was missing last year and I'd forgotten about the change!

First race at an actual purpose built race track since Bahrain, oh how things have changed. (Yes I get Imola should have happened)

Be interesting to see how teams upgrades will work on an actual track this time around. Expecting another RB cakewalk though.

F1 Media on twitter probably expecting it to be boring as well given they are bigging up a chance of rain on Sunday.

Not a fan of this track. There have been some good races there in terms of long tactical under/overcuts but it's generally just DRS overtakes down the main straight. It doesn't promote the best racing in terms of opportunistic battles as there's little space for it off the main line.

The problem with the current situation is that not even Perez can challenge Max, so even if Max has some horrendous DNFs, he'll still win with ease over the course of the entire season with such a good package. I think this is why we'll see drivers generally not even bother to battle/defend hard against him as it's just pointless with the straight line speed and DRS combo.

We need to wish for Ferrari, Merc, Aston to all improve at a faster rate than Redbull. I see this happening more towards the end of next season where Redbull will naturally get to a point where the concept can only be developed so far in this era. I feel that right now, Redbull could even be sand-bagging and holding back in many areas. They will naturally drip feed improvements through just enough to be ahead of the pack and eek it out for as long as possible.

This is only natural in F1 to have periods of dominance. Redbull have done an outstanding job with the car and should reap the rewards of that. It's just a shame it happens to be the most Toxic team we have to suffer it with.

Weather forecast isn't pleasing. This is a dull track that could do with some rain too.

Still, will be interesting to see what upgrades teams bring. This is a pure aero track and cars are usually two by two here.
