Miami

When was the track built?

Having made its F1 debut in May 2022, the Miami International Autodrome is a temporary circuit, but one designed to have a permanent feel. Set in the Hard Rock Stadium complex in Miami Gardens, home to the NFL’s famous Miami Dolphins franchise, the track is the culmination of a development process that simulated no less than 36 different layouts before settling on a thrilling, 19-turn lap that provides a street circuit vibe, not dissimilar to Melbourne’s Albert Park.

When was its first Grand Prix?

The inaugural Miami Grand Prix took place in 2022, the Florida race joining its Texan counterpart in Austin to become the second US race on the calendar – and the 11th different American venue to host a round of the Formula 1 world championship.

What's the circuit like?

A street-track spectacular. With the Hard Rock Stadium at its epicentre, the 5.41km layout features 19 corners, three straights, three DRS zones, and top speeds of over 340km/h. There are elevation changes too, the main one found between Turns 13 and 16, with the track heading over an exit ramp and under various flyovers across uneven ground. The Turn 14-15 chicane, meanwhile, has an uphill approach, with a crest in the middle, and then drops down on exit.

Why go?

The Hard Rock Stadium knows how to put on a show – it has hosted six Super Bowls, two Baseball World Series and numerous rock concerts. Put it at the heart of a track designed to encourage close racing while meeting the highest safety standards and you have a sure-fire winner for spectators. Then there’s Miami itself – famed for its sandy beaches, art deco vibe, vibrant multiculturalism and rich sporting heritage, it’s an essential destination for those visiting the Sunshine State.

Where is the best place to watch?

When viewing a sporting event in a purpose-built stadium, it’s hard to go wrong. In fact, you could walk around the top deck of the Hard Rock Stadium and see every corner of the track – pretty unique. As for the best passing spots, a seat near Turns 1, 11 or 17 should put you in the thick of the action.

Just a reminder, but consider it a warning - can we not have any further derogatory name calling of drivers, team bosses and the like. We don't expect you to like every driver/team, but at least keep comments respectful.

If you don't follow this warning, you will lose access to the race thread and the thread for the following race as well.

This includes but is not limited to such terms including Lulu, Crashstappen, Karen Horner, Whingey Spice etc.

The Merc is a real dog this year. Id say it's probably the 5th fastest car overall. Solidly midfield.

Don't know what Merc are doing so wrong to be going backwards. I mean they started these regs badly but they were still probably the 3rd fastest car overall in 2022 and the first part of 2023.

It's embarrassing for McLaren and Aston to have leapfrogged them.

Obviously Miami is quite a specific track in terms of setup of the car, etc but Mercedes seem to have never really got a decent understanding of how any of their cars have worked since the new rules came in.

If I was being approached with huge amounts of money as a potential driver to join the team in 2026 I'd be giving it a miss; if they screwed up this bad in 2022 and still haven't got a handle on it I''d have little faith they'll suddenly sort it in 2026

100%. We've gone from a car park in Vegas being the butt of jokes for 30+ years, to a car park in Miami.

I'd take 5 more years of Korea or India over this.

I can't believe we're racing around 2x car parks instead of places like Istanbul, Nurburgring, Hockenheim, Portimao or Mugello but as we well know its all about money!

Massive for Norris; hopefully will see him take a new step in his career; I think he's been guilty of over-driving a few times this last season or so at times as he's desperate for the win

Should have happened 3 years ago in Russia to be honest, but really delighted to see; he's really stepped up as McLaren leader this season with Piastri challenging him.

How can you lose time behind a safety car ?
They were 1st and 2nd before and after. Lando maintained track position because of it, but I fully expected Max to come barrelling past once they were released, never happened though.

Obviously at the end the cars were together behind the safety car but in the interim while the car was being sent out the gap increased dramatically from 11.5 seconds when the safety car was initially called; to 32 seconds when he actually made his stop - so he gained 20 seconds in the mid part of the safety car procedure.

Its likely Lando would still have ended up 1st as the 11 seconds should have been enough anyway but it could have been a lot tighter.

Yea sounds about right. I think he’s also trying to be funny but just comes off cringe most of the time.

I don't think we can measure a Belgian/Dutch sense of humour through the lens of being a Brit - its just not the same at all.
I've worked with loads of Dutch people and their sense of humour is very different to ours

At the end of the day, Max had no answer for Lando in that last stint. The SC may have given over track position but those McLaren’s looked fast indeed. Hopefully this isn’t a one-off though, these regs still seems to create weirdness at different tracks for different cars which nobody really seems to understand.

Is that what he said?! That’s just bizarre

Edit: So nice to hear the national anthem on the podium again, been a while!

Edit 2: Still pretty upset that McLaren allowed Trump to visit the garage. Why didn’t they just say no?

Like him or loathe him; he's still an ex-President / potential next President - and someone with a history of grudges, probably best just to smile and shake hands in the garage - that said it sounds like the FIA chose McLaren; why not take him and show him Haas?

Chuffed for Lando. Really pleased he's got a win. I think he's certainly a potential future champion if he gets the car.

Lewis impressed today. Seemed loads faster than George through the race and stuck within half a second of Perez for ages. That Merc clearly just doesn't have the straight line/DRS speed to overtake the RB though. : /. Seemed like Perez was holding him up after the safety car. Seems like he had good pace on those mediums and could have caught the Ferraris.

Better race than I thought it would be courtesy of the safety car shaking things up.

I caught George's interview after the race and all he did was complain that there must have been something wrong with the car

But they could have denied it maybe. Im sure they get requests for visits by a million “slebs” every race. He’s no President currently, just a pleb like everyone else. Why accept a visit from a criminal with a history/allegations of sexual assault, who already made one attempt at starting a civil war and very well might succeed the next time. Meh. Too serious for this thread.

Maybe they can deny it, maybe not - we'll need to ask the FIA. Like it or not even ex-Presidents get a ridiculous amount of deference and status in the USA

People saying *** McLaren due to the ex president of the host country paying them a visit really need to get off twitter and go outside . I wonder how many have the same ethical red line when human right abusers from the ME are hosted by team leadership...hmmm.

Anyway, absolutely stoked for McLaren and Lando, I've been a fan of the recent McLaren team (basically since Lando), so it's an awesome result! Who knows maybe the lack of grip Max was complaining about might bleed in to the rest of the season and keep things vaguely interesting, doubtful but fingers crossed!

Its a good point; isn't McLaren at least partly Bahraini owned now?

Wasn't the gap 33sec+ before the safety car? Even Lando said he probably wouldn't have won without it because he would have had to overtake 2 Ferrari's, Oscar and possibly Perez.

It was 11 seconds when the safety car was called - but 30 seconds at the point that Lando entered the pits; he would likely have come out in the lead anyway as it was roughly 9 seconds for a pit stop

During the weekend I heard someone say something along the lines of Mercedes went one way with the zero side pod car and then went the other way with this car. Because of this they apparently now know the way forward.(?!?)

Yeah, i'm not really sure what that means either.... Lol

Mercedes have been saying they know the way forward for almost 3 years now; yet they seem to be going backwards; I don't think they have a clue at this point

Having watched the F1 and Sky highlights what struck me was how many of the drivers congratulated Lando on his win. Seems to be a popular lad in the paddock, even Sainz was happy for Lando, despite their history of playful antics whilst the other is getting interviewed!

Sainz and Lando are besties so I'm not surprised he was delighted. But yeah seems very popular in the paddock generally
