***Official African Cup of Nations thread***(spoilers)

That was pretty disgusting to see to be honest. Belhadj's challenge was simply disgraceful and the goalkeeper nothing more than a thug. I'd be really embarrassed to be Algerian having watched that.

Can just see them losing their cool against England and trying to snap each of our players in the World Cup.

Don't know all the details but that is a disgusting decision! Weren't players and staff killed?

Some staff killed I think and a few players injured.

This seems like a total knee-jerk reaction, they were desperate for the tournament to go perfectly ahead of the World Cup but I don't see why they are so intent on punishing Togo after their ordeal.

My mum thought she heard SSN say Togo would have been expelled if they had carried on. If true, ridiculous! Could back fire into other teams boycotting event becuase of Togo's treatment.

The Algerians were pretty dirty after they realised they were getting thrashed but the penalty should have been re-taken you can't just stop dead like that.

The keeper was off his line before the ball was kicked so it should've been re-taken on that basis, garth crooks aint got a clue!

I hope the other teams in the African Nations cup get together and threaten to boycott the tourney if the ban isn't overturned because, frankly, its a disgusting decision for them to come to. Ban for two years and a fine is what I'm reading, its a joke, you can't expect people to compete at any level, let alone a high level when you cant' sleep at night for fear of being attacked again, or nightmares. Theres no chance of competing well in that situation and a true embarassement to punish a team for deciding they couldn't go on.

Even though theres a "slight" issue in that the organisers did say to not drive in but only fly directly to the main citys due to safety concerns and someone made the idiotic decision to ignore that advise. But the players and the team as a whole shouldn't be punished for that.

I bet FIFA are worried about the integrity of their cash cow competition.

Well done, that's just blatently said money > lives.

Idiots, it's nothing more than kicking a leather ball around.

What a joke. If this had happened anywhere else in world there would have only been extreme embarrassment that the authorities couldn't provide adequate protection for the sportsmen whilst involved in the compotation. If the hosts couldn't ensure safety whilst the players where on the ground they shouldn't have been selected.

CAF chief press officer Suleiman Habuba said the decision was based on article 78 of CAF regulations which say: "A forfeit notified less than 20 days before the start or during the final competition shall entail in addition of the forfeit of the entry fee, a maximum fine stipulated by the regulations as well as the suspension of the concerned national association for the following two editions of the African Cup of Nations."

They knew about the ambush and didn’t care about the dead. What an appalling decision, CAF is full of morons. All the nations should now refuse to play in the next tournament.

When people have died and others injured you just ignore the rulebook - you give them as much time as they need to make a decision then accept that decision. Can't believe these morons! People have died and they cite regulations?! Muppets. I can't imagine the other African teams will accept this.

I know the Togo government made the decision to withdraw but that makes no difference imo.
