**- Official Asus P5K Thread -**

yay i fixed it now. Seems Vista would only take the ICH9 driver, not the ICH9R driver... its now working fine with the ICH9 driver, yet i had all sort of issues with the ICH9R driver as stated in my previous post...

i have no idea why though, as i have confirmed i definitely have the ICH9R controller...

meh, who cares, its working a treat now :D

Got the P5K-E/WiFi-AP board yesterday so been trying it out. Never owned an ASUS board before, always nice to compare the differences between manufacturers :D

I gave up trying to get AHCI running, can't be bothered to slipstream a new XP disc with the drivers, and in Vista it kept moaning about corrupted hard/optical disks even before and after installing the Intel Matrix Storage Manager drivers. Anyone have any ideas? IDE mode works fine though, although I'm trying out XP again for a while due to a couple of reasons.

Haven't tried overclocking yet, what's a reliable voltage for a E2180 @ 3.2Ghz?

Just an update, did anyone ever have problems running this series of boards with GeIL ULL RAM? I was fiddling in the BIOS and I'm under the impression the default voltage for the memory is 1.5v (?), set it to 2.2v and getting no fatal errors now. I find it stupid that this GeIL RAM is supposed to have 'safe' SPD settings to make it compatible yet doesn't, still giving headaches to naive first-time users.

Yup that’s correct, all my micron d9 ram kits default to 1.8v and guess what, none of them pass memtest without kicking up errors. Thankfully the machine posts so I can correct the low vdimm

Just got the P5K-E wifi , using ancient WinXP & need the sata driver on a floppy when prompted F6. scoured the Asus website drivers & can only fiind a sata utility which is 5meg+ so that can't be right. Can someone post a link to the correct driver please

looking on the driver disk there is a ref to a floppy file AFIE MFC aplication is that it?

You don't normally need drivers for the disk unless you are using AHCI or RAID?

In any case the drivers you need are under the chipset section! :)

'Make Intel ICH9 RAID Driver Disk Version 7.5.0.1017 for Windows 2000/XP/2003 & 64bit XP/2003/ Vista/ 64bit Vista'

Hi there, couple of questions:

1: I've just bought a new system, consisting of the Asus P5K Premium, Q6600 CPU and GSkill 4GB DDR2 PK PC2-8500C5 (2x2GB). I need some advice on which dimm slots to install the memory into, and also if I need to configure the BIOS to accept this memory (it says 800mhz on the BIOS 'boot' screen)

2: Are there any specifics 'idiot' guides to OCing with this mobo?

Thanks,

I've only used the yellow slots so far and they seem to work fine. The board nearly always runs the memory async and faster than normal. In the BIOS there are options to take control and set it just how u want it. Get going with everything on auto then you can start adjusting stuff bit by bit.

Thanks, I've currently got it installed in the yellow slots, just wanted to make sure that is the right spot.

I read something in the manual about having to set something in the BIOS for 1066mhz RAM, but I didn't really understand it to be honest!

Going by the book your ram should only be running at 266MHz to make your Q6600 run correctly but I think the board will have set it to run at 333MHz by default. Once you sus the board out a bit more you will change some settings in the BIOS from auto to manual and then u will be able to set your memory to run even faster, yours is rated to run at 533MHz. . .

Under JumperFree Configuration, set overclocking to Manual mode.

Then at DRAM frequency change from Auto to DDR-1066.

You can keep pretty much most of the bottom options in that menu on Auto (apart from CPU and RAM voltages), although some need to be tweaked for clocking quads. Some guy made a quick summary of the main options on that tab in this thread and what to set them to; search for it ;)

Thanks to both for help so far :) - I've set the AI Overclocking to 'Manual'.

One more little question, the DRAM Frequency, I only have DDR2-1064 (and below) - the number might only be slightly different than 1066, but me not knowing much about this I thought I have better bring it up!

(EDIT: The FSB Frequency is set to 266, this was done by the system, and I cannot seem to change it at the moment (probably need to take something off Auto - again, just thought I'd mention it :))

The BIOS on these boards are weird, in that some ranged values don't appear in a 'list' when you press ENTER (instead it does nothing). The + and - keys cycle through the values, mostly for frequency entries (CPU voltage allows you to use either way though *shrug*).

The FSB is never exact anyway, it's always off a little, as long as it matches the multiples/ratios of the FSB strap or the CPU it's fine.

As Skyboat says, you may not get it exact, 1064MHz is pretty much spot on.

Make sure you have the ram latencies set to 5-5-5-15 and ram voltage set to at least 2V.

Once you have done that run memtest86 and if your error free the jobs done!

I just installed the P5K-E , if you use a 9800X2 GPU it will cover 4 of the sata plugs so you will need angled sata cables to be able to use them, 1 came in the box so I can use 3 of the sockets atm.

tbh pretty much any 2 slot gfx card covers the sata port on the P5K boards, very common issue. You do get 6 right angle sata cables with the P5K Premium though. I used to have an issue but as my GFX card is watercooled and the PCB is now 'naked' the ports are no longer covered.

Yeah don't do what I did and not think to change the default RAM voltage until AFTER re-installing XP/Vista with and without AHCI enabled a half dozen times due to errors :D

The P5K series is based off an older chipset design, before ASUS decided it would be smart to make all the connectors at right-angles as seen on their newer X38 and other boards. Only really Abit have done it, and that was only because their mobo came out later :)

Ok, one more thing, a little more off topic from what I was discussing before:

I've been having issues with Vista and my Asus 9800GX2 where the drivers wouldn't install properly. I tried about 10 different attempts, with different versions, sometimes using Driver Cleaner in between attempts and sometimes trying full re-installs in between attempts - nothing worked. - The only thing is, that I have my GX2 installed in the 2nd PCI-E port (because it covered the SATA ports when plugged into the first PCI-E port). - I've since re-installed XP (because it seemed to install fine with that OS), but I've since found some unused SATA right angled cables (for some reason my box didn't have any and I didn't think to check!!)

Do you think having the GX2 installed in the second PCI-E port could be causing Vista's driver installation to fail? (I was about to RMA the card as I can deal wit XP for now, but in a years time or so I would be likeing to install Vista at some point!)

Thanks,
