ED do run “free flight” times, but I’ve no idea when the next one is.

In addition ED regularly have sales, with many aircraft at half price.

What type of aircraft do you fancy flying, there really aren’t many “less good” ones?
Eg
Helicopters
Warbirds
Trainers
Korean era
Cold War era
Late century ground attack
Modern fast multi role

The F14 appeals - just because it’s always been a favourite plane. Quite fancy a Mig29 or F16… Anything relatively modern I guess. Not a fan of props or early jets.

Helicopters - defo would want to try before buying. :D

Didn't ED recently announce a program where you can try all the products, one or two at a time, for 2 weeks in any 12 month period?

Well remembered. Here's a link:

As it's free, give the Huey a try as it's great to fly and not "that" difficult.
Ref jets, the F14 really is iconic, but be aware that it's weapon options are fairly limited (after all, it was primarily built just for A2A).
Good all rounders are the F18 and F16. The F16 is a newer release and is still missing some systems, but it's getting there. The F18 is now mostly finished and carrier take off and landing is a great challenge.

I was looking for that - it was one of the things that made me think DCS would be a good thing to try out. I've just found the site where I can activate some trials, so I'll give them a go :)

^^’If’… ok ‘when’ I buy a helicopter module it will be that one!

‘Problem’ with DCS is the complexity, 100 hours on the hornet and I wouldn’t even call myself a beginner yet!

That said a lot of those hours are learning the ui and map stuff so some skills will be transferable!

My current tactic is to completely ignore cold start procedures and focus purely on combat and navigation. This way one can get combat ready in just a couple of hours.
The Apache looks tasty, but I would still bet that the Ka-50 would remain the best combat chopper experience in DCS - purely because you don't need a copilot in that thing in real life. If only our DCS Ka-50 was the night version with FLIR...

It’s ok, not like the Apache is a complicated machine

looks awesome, I look forward to not having a clue in yet another module.

I do enjoy the cold start but for me at least learning the radar and weapons systems is way (way, way) more than just a couple of hours. But I’m guessing if you can use maverick missiles on a hornet then you can use them on any aircraft that carries them.

I have been waiting for this since DCS launched with the BlackShark, I had a hope they would release the Apache as a module one day so 13 years later here it is.
I am a Ground Pounder so of course I fly the A-10c. It's going to to be a hard learning curve but hey whether I learn to fly it or not I will buy it.
I originally used to play Janes LongBow2 but that all went South when Microsoft updated Windows so when DCS BlackShark came around I jumped at the opportunity.

Looking forward to it .

Mossie now out with the latest patch today.

Just been getting the hang of it. A little intimidating at first with it's seemingly randomly designed cockpit. Now a bit more settled, controls in place and it's working very nicely. Lovely looking.

Yeah I bought the mossie when it was in it’s pre release sale. It’s unlikely I’ll get round to trying it for a while as I’m still getting to grips with the hornet, can’t for the life of me evade ir missiles and yep I’ve watched the vids!

Ref the IR missiles:
The newer ones, eg Sa18 Iglas are very nasty and usually are pretty much invisible.
For any ground attack work in the F18, the starting point is to assume there’s some around and simply fly above them (never under 10). If you have to go low, pop flares. On a low level run in a known hot spot, I’ll usually aim to pop 1 every sec. Once you’ve cleared the target, do go defensive, regardless of what you can see.

For air launched, flares and violet manoeuvres help.

For both, come off afterburner, as it’s a massive heat source.

Thanks. I’ve read some stuff about killing burners altogether which seems to help but of course has some negative side effects!!!

The DCS Apache 64 is gonna be a day 1 purchase for me. Have not really flown a virtual apache since Microproses Legendary Gunship (C64) and Gunship 2000 (Amiga). I have a certificate somewhere in my Attic from Wild Bill Stealey himself for getting the Congressional medal of honour on Gunship C64 back in the late 1980s.
