***Official Intel Haswell Thread***

You may find its a bit of a downgrade

Your i7 920 may be a few generations old but it does have hyperthreading. I can see more games like BF3 coming out that use those extra cores/threads. For a bit of fun I put a GTX 690 in one of my i7 9xx rigs and it ran better than in my 3960x rig.

I think my i7 9xx rigs will see off Haswell.:)

You'd just get the HT Haswell, like the 2700k/3700k is for SB.

Really can't believe the 3960x ran a 690 worse than an i7 9xx, given the 3960x is 12 threads, 6 cores each better than a core in an i7 9xx.

We'd really have to wait and see.

Can't see it being massively better, Ivy added a few percent, can see Haswell adding a few more percent, so possible ~15%? (Less depending on the situation)

Gaming wise? Can't see their being much difference at all for conventional gaming.

I'll probably buy a Haswell quad with HT and Maximus board over my 2500k, just for lol's.

Hmm was thinking of building a new PC but now I have read this I will wait for Haswell - Will we see it this side or the other side of Christmas?

yeah, like 6 months away.

I want/need a CPU now buy one, get one when there on offer and your not regret it.. waiting 6 months over a well priced ivy bridge for ~10% performance increase..

It really did run better in the 9xx rig. In 3dmark11 there was a graphics score difference of 500 points. The card I used was my worst ocer, I want to try my other 2 cards in that machine when I get time. My best card scores over 21100 for graphics in 3dmark11 so moving that over to the 9xx rig will probably not show the same improvement as the other card.

James2k also runs a GTX 690 in an 9xx rig and gets very impressive performance out of it.

I think I may have an idea why, I have just been doing some 3dmark11 runs on my 3960x setup with the strap @125 and bclk @129. At those settings there seems to be a significant improvement in performance over the normal 100 strap/bclk. With X58 the bclk is 133 or more depending on how you oc them.

Im only guessing but I think the GTX 690 prefers a higher bclk on the system.

I don't think there will be a massive increase in real world performance on desktop applications but I am excited about Haswell as it will make it possible to play a variety of games on the new Win 8 Pro tablets. Also useful in ultrabooks etc.

I'm not seeing a compelling reason to move off my i7 920 based platform.

PCI-E 3.0 is the only thing that is making me think at the moment. SSD's seem to have plateaued in terms of performance, and SATA 3 doesn't look to be moving forward with the latest range of drives. The only new technology I can discern is thunderbolt, and I'm not hearing much by way of rejoicing on the streets for that....

finally going to upgrade from my 3ghz Q6700 to Haswell. It was going to Ivy but the heat issues turned me away.
The chip to get is the 4770K by the sound of it, roll on April-June!

Yep 4770K seems to be the one to go for.

Can't believe how low the TDPs are getting now lol.
