I don't see why you would upgrade to haswell for anything but energy effeciency, it's only marginall faster than the current crop. It's all about energy effeciency.

S for the psu, hardly surprising as the current PSUs where never designed with this in mind.

I have a core2duo (I know, long time coming.....been abroad for a while) so what would I upgrade to? Ivy or Haswell?

I meant from current generation, which is what a lot of people are talking about.
Even then, you going to spend the extra for 10% on its own, unless you want the other features.
 
What a shame. Between this and the rebadge 7 series that nvidia are launching this month there does not seem to be allot of gear which I can scratch my technology itch. Kind of depressing really.

I would wait and see what happens when it is officially out and then decide, most of this is just rumors and speculation.

Agreed, my plan is to have drop in upgrade with 4960X in 2013, then sometime next year build a whole new system, New Case, PSU, DDR4, Maxwell GPU, 'Haswell -E' 5960X and X99 mobo. Yeah boi :D

(Unless AMD have something better ;))

I have loads of launch day benchmarks to show you guys as soon as I can! Including efficiency stuff Ivy Vs Haswell.
 
No I cant!!

Gibbo has some interesting Laptops he has been testing/benching. I have just been doing desktop stuff.

More this weekend as I get more LN2 tomorrow. I am doing a launch event with Gigabyte if you guys want to see me bench Haswell.
 
In that case, someone bribe Gibbo, we need those juicy numbers. I don't see this as an essential or big desktop upgrade, unless you happen to be upgrading anyway, unless there's something we don't know. This is all about energy effeciency, so HTPC type forms and mobile devices. Hopefully a NUC2 would be nice.

hmm this makes me think that the whole selling point of these new chips will be power usage and not the speed increase if there is any at all.

all sales need a angle i guess :D

This was the whole design point off them, so it's no surprise. Intel needed a mobile and power reduction chip, that's haswell as well as much improved GFXs the other speed increase are token to say its better than the last version.

You'r forgetting the 5-10% estimated speed increase per Mhz. Certainly not worth upgrading to from Ivy but you cannot deny it will be faster than ivy, clock for clock.
