*** Official Kodi (née XBMC) Thread ***

Hey all,

I'm new to kodi and recently bought a fire TV stick for ease of portability when working away.
I noticed its a bit of a faff manually adding things to kodi so was thinking on getting a fully loaded apk file.
Someone recommended wookie pro so installed the free one to try first. It seems pretty good really. I was just wondering if there were any others that people recommend.
I would like it really to include movies, IPTV and TV shows. Not too worried about sport but it would be beneficial.

Forgot to add, I also had tvmc on it for a bit and tried to get IPTV stalker to work but most of the time just got errors. Some channels worked mind you.

i think iptv stalker has gone paid now.

I believe so. I think that is why people try to clone MAC addresses to make it work. I've seen one called i4tv which is essentially a IPTV stalker clone which I may try.

Any others worth noting?

found one called prison break which im going to try out, there seems to be plenty of clones about but theyre not as polished and dont have the tvguide.

I'm thinking of getting a Fire TV and installing Kodi on it but have a question. Does Kodi support the UK catchup tv platforms, e.g. iplayer, itv, 4od/All4? I've not used Kodi and don't want to spend money on a box that wont do everything I want it to do. I know the Fire TV box has some catchup services on it, but not all.

I've had a bit of a google but I got the impression Kodi is more setup to point to streams rather than install separate supported apps

In my experience the Addons for iPlayer/All4/ITV etc aint that great. They tend to break quite often and need updating, plus the IU isnt great for them. However you should be able to use the official apps on the Amazon store, I'm pretty sure they're all there, plus more like some apps that can stream all the free to view channels live (TVPlayer its called).

Can you install the apps within Kodi, or do you need to dual boot Kodi and the original fire tv software so you can use kodi for NAS related activities and fire tv for the offical apps?

Theres no dual boot as such, you'll always boot into the FireTV OS, you can then load up Kodi from there aswell as any other app you've got installed like iPlayer etc.

Installing and starting Kodi isnt quite as easy to start with because Amazon banned Kodi from their app store, so needs to be sideloaded, then it doesnt show as an official app. I use another program called FireStarter, which is a launcher that allows you to choose which app you want to run. It's not a perfect solution as you still boot into the FireTV OS and after like 10-15secs the FireStarter Launcher loads.

Sounds a little tricky but (as long as you have ADB setup correctly) takes about 5mins to install and setup.

Ok, that sounds quite good actually, that way I can stay in Fire TV and use the apps there or launch Kodi when I need it. Thanks for your help :)

Yeah that's fair. Was just interested as I've never needed to type in xbmc/kodi. But then I don't use streams. Kodi works with just about any device I've thrown at it. I would expect they would be fine. Imho Linux has better driver support than windows atm

I'm looking to replace my HTPC with 2 new devices running openelec; 1 upstairs and 1 downstairs. Are there any downsides to the Pi2 at the moment that I should consider? Any file formats that don't play?

I've a single x265 file which I'm aware may not play, but otherwise most of my media is flac, h264, divx, mpg2 etc which my HTPC has handled fine.

Downstairs - 1080p and HD audio passthrough
Upstairs - 720p TV with built in speakers

I'm going to set up my server with a shared database and tv server.

I've looked at the brix etc and am tempted, but for the extra outlay, i'm not sure what benefit it would bring.
