**** Official Microsoft Flight Simulator Thread ****

How is this these days? I'm considering getting back into simming and debating between X Plane and MSFS. If it's a still mess with basic things broken I think I'll avoid it for a big longer.

Mostly interested in airliners and IFR.

Airliners have a way to go imo, but have taken big steps forward already with both the Flybywire A32NX and Aerosoft CRJ.

They aren’t really my bag though I confess - I enjoy MSFS for pratting about doing stupid stuff and taking in the sights, so perhaps someone can give you a better answer than me!

Cheapest way to try it would be pick up a month of game pass and download the A32NX for free... you can see what you think and try it out for a month for chump change.

This is what I'm doing - well, I left my PC on last night to download all 152GB of it, and it got stuck for whatever reason at 70GB. It's so frustrating, I have no idea why they decided to use this method of installing the game - I can't think of any other game that needs to be running to install itself. It's makes no sense.

Sigh. I got frustrated enough with this last year when it released so my hope was that it had improved and I haven't even flown again yet and it's annoyed me.

Meanwhile X Plane takes no time at all to download and you can fly whilst downloading things for it in the background. I just don't want to invest in X Plane if MSFS is the future.

Performance “hotfix” patch (and new nav data data) available now. Haven’t tried it yet but seems generally positive on the main forums.

it’s just a new launcher (~1gb) and small couple hundred mb for new nav data.

Ok, tried this today. In certain areas (local rural type areas) I'm seeing massive performance gains! In other areas, like cities, no real change. This goes against what the hotfix is supposed to do no?

Quick example (not in VR, normal pancake monitor) at local small airfield near me - used to get 50fps in the basic Cessna cockpit sat on the runway for takeoff (once all the loading is done). After the hotfix I'm getting 71fps! Exact same in game settings. That's an insane increase.
The thing is, after watching a few videos and some recommendations I put my Nvidia drivers back to the older 457.30 set yesterday, and then the game update applied. So, I have no idea if it's the game hotfix, the 457.30 drivers, or a combo of both that's delivering the goodness.
Either way, I'd strongly suggest trying the older drivers (they're not that old) along with the new hotfix!

The main thing I noticed that I believe is increasing the performance is that my GPU (3090FE) is now being used more in these rural areas. Usage is now in the 90% range whereas before it was only in the 70%'s. In cities etc I believe I'm way more CPU bound, as everyone is really, and GPU usage is quite low, so that's why there's no real change. This makes me think it might be the 457.30 drivers that are having the biggest +ve effect for me, in certain scenarios anyway.

I think it’s more on the CPU actually... before it was holding you back more even in rural areas, now it seems to be distributing better and getting less bogged down with the server requests so let’s your 3090 run more free, hence why you are seeing higher utilisation.

Then the reason cities are still running less well is because other stuff (like all those drawcalls) are still bogging down the CPU anyway.

So when I'm in the 3rd person view and switch back to cockpit it seems to narrow my view and I can't zoom out to what it was before, anyone else get this or is it me?

So you reckon it's more likely the recent hotfix that's led to the improvement I'm seeing (by freeing up the CPU a bit), not the Nvidia drivers? I wish I'd updated the game and drivers separately and tested along the way so I'd know for sure.

I'm trying out MS flightsim in VR properly for the first time today. VR is just insane, I'm still getting used to it.

I'm having a spot of bother trying to tweak OpenXR developer settings and in game settings to get the best overall smoothness though.
In OpenXR With custom render scale set to 50% and in game resolution set to 100% (as advised by The Flight Sim Guy on YT) and motion re projection set to automatic, then a mix of medium and high settings in game, I think it's rendering out at 30fps and trying to keep it at that with the 90Hz refresh rate using interpolation or whatever it does. It's mostly smooth but there are motion artefacts when panning around the plane (which is making me feel a tad nauseous but I'm doing ok on that front!)

I've got the "Display frame timing overlay" box ticked in OpenXR too so I get the little floating panel showing various Hz stats but no actual FPS - not quite sure how to interpret these yet.
If I set Motion Re projection to Disabled in OpenXR I can't get it smooth yet. Do you have any tips for the best overall VR settings using OpenXR (or not?) and in game?

@Zeeflyboy

Is it just me or is the FBW proper borked atm? Sometimes the avionics don’t work, the ILS landings are all over the place and during AP flight, it will suddenly bank to the extreme right and has to be manually brought out of it.

Nah not just you; I used it last night for the first time in a while and exactly the same thing; banks to the right and very hard to get control back

Haven’t tried it recently but it hasn’t been updated in a while as they have been working on the custom autopilot version rather than the FBW... so might be be better off using the dev version rather than the experimental.

I think they plan on sorting it out soon re the installer, I guess they’ll replace experimental FBW with experimental custom autopilot... but until then if you want to try it then you can download the custom autopilot version here https://github.com/flybywiresim/a32nx

edit - actually looks like they already did. Try the new experimental version on the installer. There’s something to do re thrust lever setup on the EFB but not looked into it yet... think this guy covers it

Wow just tried this on my laptop with a 2070 Max Q, not sure if it's because plundervolt but I was down to 6fps!!!!! Before it was at least 20!

To anyone using the A32NX there are some big changes coming with it turning into a full standalone aircraft rather than a mod to the existing one.

https://fsnews.eu/the-workshop-16-standalone-a32nx-flypad-improvements-custom-autopilot/
That standalone bit caught me right out lol.

I had to reinstall everything following a clean windows reinstall. Was sitting there angry for 2 days wondering what the hell had happened to the plane. I then realised I was still using the default one? What a knob

Hi to all,
I'm still getting to grips with MSFS after FSX and am really missing the 737ng.
On the 320NEO or 747 how do i enter ADF frequencies when there is no ADF panel?
Does it have to be done thru the FMCCDU?
I'm sure its really simple but not obvious
TIA

Are you using the Fly by Wire A320?
