Official Operating temperature of an engine?

Mine's up to 89/91 deg within 15 mins of running, this is after replacing the EGR and main stat. Best £60 I ever spent.

Trouble is with these dealer monkies is that they are guided by the diagnostic computer. "Computer says no" I'm afraid.

There's loads of threads on E90Post at the moment concerning running temps - http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=746777 for starters.

Bit of a bump. But thought i would tune in and say i finally got round to getting my thermostat done on my car. Car never went past about 78/79 and normally whilst driving it stuck at 75 degrees ( reading off the climate control coolant temp setting). Just drove home from getting it done and now its nice and toasty and sat at 95/96 degrees (which seems a little hot maybe? or just right?)

Anyway, big difference and the car sounds quieter at idle and seems smoother overall now. £130 well spent i hope!

As long as it's below 100, it's fine. Your temp needle will probably stick to 90 anyway.

Which car?

Did OP ever get any joy with BMW?

I must say after my thermostat change the car seems to run so much better, smoother and is a lot quiter when idling now. I'm pretty sure it is not just a placebo either :p.

Extremely common on these cars, the BMW forums are full of posts about failed stats.

My E90 was running at around 75c until I changed both the EGR and main stats, it now gets up to 90c after about 15 minutes driving and sits there nicely!

Be aware on an automatic BMW sometimes changing both the EGR and main stats doesnt fix the problem, theres another thermostat on the Transmission Oil Heat Exchanger which if fails can also cause low engine running temps.

Cheers

Fine a little above 100 too, cooling systems in the majority of cars are pressurised so the boiling temperature is higher.

For example, the main cooling fan in a Corvette C4 doesn't even come on until around 110 degrees C.

Bike fan comes on at 104 but i've seen it up to 108, 120 i think it starts flashing at you to do something drastic... quickly

Go to section 4 on cooling on how the N20 cooling system works, I dont think the N54 will be too different:

The diesel BMW shouldn't really go above 100 degrees in normal operation. The link above is to a the petrol engines which work a lot hotter with different types of stats and temp control.

The cooling fan on the diesels comes on around 95-96degrees.
