Rendering distance last night was possibly the worst i've ever seen it. Couldn't see infantry from my reaver until i was like 50 meters from the floor!! Fat lot of good that was when i started taking fire at like 150+ meters  I also don't like how close you have to be for night vision to be useful, could do with working a bit further away imo.

Rendering distance seems ok on Woodman, had fantastic fun earlier pounding Ti Alloys from the top of the cliff at The Crown. I could see infantry at the far side.

Today was the complete opposite.

That's how it should be, for everyone, at all times, whether in vehicles, on foot or flying.

Why has the render distance changed again? Or does it work dynamically based on the number of players around?

The render distance is fixed but only a maximum of 500 dynamic objects can be rendered at a time (infantry / vehicles / deployables etc) So they have an algorithm that has to determine which of the 501 or more things around you is the most relevant to display.. you could say it hasn't been doing a great job of this and will most likely be worked upon over the months and years, but you'd also have to accept this is never going to be perfect either.

I believe their recent changes beyond a certain range of 50-100m or so favored enemies rendering over friendlies. So you may see a bunch of enemy players on a hill in the distance now, but you won't see that they may be fighting a large force of your own factions players just down the same hill from them. But that's better than the other way around.

Basically the 500 limit isn't great when you consider the scale, that even relatively medium-scale fights will easily surpass it. But this is the true performance hit you take in large fights in PS2 and why it's so CPU limited. Because the server is sending you 500 things that need to be tracked and updated around you... they can't raise it much beyond that without very quickly having huge impact on your FPS. It would have by far the biggest impact on visual improvement of large fights in what is being rendered by raising this, but I doubt it will happen for years to come.

What I can't get my head around is that they managed it with PS1 pretty well. In that time, CPU's and bandwidth have significantly increased in speed, so why can't it handle it?

I've just installed PS2. Unfortunately, it is so buggy that it was unplayable. The whole screen kept flickering and I couldn't see a thing.

That happens sometimes, you can fix it by a number of ways, jump in and out of a vehicle, exit to menu and back to the game, alt-enter to window screen, changing the resolution or exiting the game and relogging.

Anyway, my current problem is that I can't login to the game... My Outfit tells me there's been logging problems all day. :(

I had a blast last night, first time in a while.

Really enjoyed it. Had 7k of SC available so bought the vehicle starter pack! Give me a chance to try other things and really enjoyed it!

Cracking video - game is awesome when its like that. No other experience like it, especially in a squad and you are working towards the same goal... even being pinned under fire is fun, the noise of it... the thrill of poking your head out to see the sky alight with gunfire, explosions etc

It can only get better... stick with it chaps, this game will give you a bank full of memories in years to come.

I had a few off days recently and just felt so 'meh' about the whole thing (Not good as a squad leader). Getting motivation back again now :-)

For whatever reason I just seem to have been shockingly bad at aiming at times... I would track a target and then expect him to move the other way, and fire off target. Not sure what's wrong with me! lol.

This is STUNNING - and you see this every time you log in if you want to. No end of different actions to get involved in and no two battles is ever quite the same.

Reaver downed in one shot by a phantom rocket. Spawn a new reaver, 10 seconds later some retard in a lib flies straight into me destroying my fresh reaver. gg game
