*** Official Rant/Praise about Vettel versus other drivers thread ***

He's already been very beatable in same-car conditions as we all know, put them all in the same car yadda yadda and he'll be wiped out by likes of Alonso and Hamilton without shadow of a doubt. However, it's a mixed field and it's not always easy to judge someone based on what they do when they're already out in front.
He is quite a likeable guy, and let's face it he's more British than 90% of the people inhabiting Britain (no racism intended there). Then again people keep praising his sense of humour. Can't knock a liking of Monty Python but liking Little Britain? I'd dislike most people for that ;)

As we all know, he is good out front and time trialing - but any kind of pressure and he cracks. The car is also clearly designed for his driving style, so it is difficult to compare him to his team mate.

After the topgear tonight he was quickest on the track.

Love or hate him, with the same car as the other f1 drivers who visited top gear he was fastest. Yes only by 0.1 seconds, but that is the difference between a world class driver and a champion.

Wasn't barrichellos time 1.44:3?, so he was 3 tenths quicker at 1.44:0

:p

I want to hate him, because it's making what is actually a fantastic season somewhat boring with him winning all the time. However he is an extremely likeable guy and is exactly what an F1 Champion should be, his appearance on Top Gear also showed what a personality he is.

It would certainly be good to see him having to fight his way through the field a little more to see how he does when he isn't at the front the whole time.

This, really.

Vettel trying to pass Hamilton was a GLOL moment for me. It reminded me of some of those D. Hill vs MSC battles.

His car was so much faster in that stage of the race (than Hamilton's) but he just couldn't place it where it needed to be in order to make a pass!

A lot of the comments on here suggest people think Vettel's never had to overtake before? or something..
Its like they assume he jumped into the RB and walked into the title, everyone's forgetting how well he performed for Toro Rosso? he got the drive at RB because of his speed and overtaking ability..

you believe topgear dont fix the times after the tom cruise and cameron diaz crap?

even if they dont fix the times how accurate are the times? its topgear its probably jeremy clarkson ands a stop watch :p

He's certainly IMO knocking on the door of 'great', I kind of like the guy, but being stereotypically german traits just don't endear him to me at times.

It's hard to say where he stands, but certainly I'd say he's almost at the Alonso/Hamilton level (My two highest rated drivers), and above the rest of the field for sure..

I think the last race put a spanner in the works when he got so easily baulked by Hamilton, which just takes the edge of me calling him 'great'..

Whilst the TG Test track was a good outing for him, and I was reasonably impressed, that leaderboard is miniscule, and you have the oddities of Hamilton setting a 1:44.07 on a wet and oily track, something that made the stig ask him "How did you do that"..

1:44.0 - Sebastian Vettel
1:44.3 – Rubens Barrichello
1:44.4 – The Stig (II – Ben Collins)
1:44.6 – Nigel Mansell
1:44.7 – Lewis Hamilton (wet & oily)
1:44.7 – Jenson Button (hot)
1:44.9 – Jenson Button (falling snow)
1:46.0 – The Stig (I – Perry McCarthy)
1:46.3 – Damon Hill
1:47.1 – Mark Webber (very wet)
DNF – Michael Schumacher

All you can say for sure is Vettel was faster then Barichello and Button (and lets face it, Button is not fast in anything that doesn't have good balance).. it's hardly some definitive measure..

Not far wrong. It's just some fairly well spoken woman with a traditional stopwatch. Watch the recent behind-the-scenes video for the Vettel lap... on their website.

The times aren't done with a proper timing loop. The track doesn't have one. I wouldn't be surprised if all the times are heavily massaged. Just simple things like the make/model of tyre they use on that car... surely after all these years it has gone out of production?

95 points behind, GLOL that.

Oh come on, it's a bit of fun. Anyone with a shred of intelligence isn't going to take that seriously.

I agree with most of the comments. But remember Spain? Lewis put two tons of pressure on Seb! He held it well, Lewis was trying, granted the car helped a lot but he nursed that last sector to just have enough traction on the last corner to hold it where it was needed.

He's a world class driver with exceptional talent, but his nerve when trying to overtake is somewhat questionable. He just lacks that do or die instinct that Alonso and Hamilton have.
