Thanks! I would love to be able to do that but I have a terrible Brummi accent :-/ I need elocution lessons I think

Don't worry about it mate, it's about getting some confidence, people tend not to care about your accent - it's all about what you're saying rather than how. Heck you're likely to get people watching you just because of the accent.

I've a terribly bad Scottish one and get no complaints, not that I do much talking on mine either! :D

I'm looking to get into making videos for youtube, and after playing around a lot with my webcam, VAC, adobe audition and OBS, I've managed to get a AV quality that I'm happy with. I've got a number of ideas that should prove popular with the game's community, and quite enjoyed making the clips.

However, editing the clips together is a right pain, I've been using Lightworks, and honestly, I'm struggling. I'm not looking to do anything particularly fancy, I just need transition effects, and to be able to overlay the video with images and other videos occasionally, as well as trimming etc.

Any advice on a simpler to use software package?

I use Sony Vegas and its pretty good and easy to use. You can also try Windows Movie Maker if its just for simple stuff

Holy thread activity Batman! I missed it all as I was deep in an Overwatch hole I thought I'd never crawl out of... :p

I'm not sure about "simpler" but if you're interested in trying out different (free) options you could give Blender a go - I don't think any editor which has all the features is ever going to be super simple, you've just got to stick at it until you know how to do the things you need...

Checkout a guy called "MikeyCal Meyers" on YouTube, he has a decent easy to follow set of tutorials on using Blender for video editing (some parts aren't super relevant for gameplay videos but it should be enough to get started). I've been using Blender for our channel and it's done everything we needed so far (happy to help if you need any advice on it too :))

Hey Jolli, apologies no-one seemed to spot your message... I was just thinking to myself "it's been a while since there was activity in the recording/streaming thread" and 'lo and behold there is...

To answer your question at the end there - I'm on 16:10 as well but when I use OBS I have the output set to 1920x1080 and adjust the capture window to fit that area.... It helps if you just set the game resolution to 1920x1080 as well (it'll look stretched slightly to you but fine on the stream/recording)

Streaming seems attractive indeed due to not having to edit etc. but I always worry that I'm wasting time because a recorded video is on YouTube forever but ultimately a stream has a limited lifespan... We've streamed for a few hours now and again and typically get 0 viewers the whole time, where we could have recorded for YouTube in that time instead... How exactly to grow an audience streaming seems more mysterious even than how to gain viewers on YouTube!!

No worries mate. I had been thinking the same as you actually. I don't mind having low viewers on y/tube to twitch starting out as everyone starts somewhere, but I feel do feel I would get demotivated quite quickly with a consistent 0 viewers streaming. Food for thought I suppose. Maybe I am build up enough of a youtube following that a few will come over when I start up streaming.

I thought the same mate to be honest. Although I am not really broad, I have fairly "common" Wigan accent and I have found a lot of people from different countries find it enjoyable which was pretty strange to me as I thought for sure it would be off putting. You never know until you give it a go I suppose.

Aw man, this streaming malarky!

Broadcast to twitch, just a black scree. Broadcast to youtube perfect video but no audio.

Recording is good, I get both video and audio.

Using OBS, can anyone recommend anothe rfree one that might captur everything?

Thanks

Are you running 64bit version? And maybe try running it with Administration permissions.

Yeah don't give up with OBS, it should work - are you running OBS Studio or regular OBS? How do you have it set up?

Got it sorted for youtube, looks like iracing has to be on top full screen to get sound through to OBS.

Proabably the same for twitch, will give it a go and see how it works..

Has anyone ever had this message from YouTube placed below their video:

'We detected your video may be shaky. Would you like us to stabilize it?'

What's all that about, then?

Tah, very useful information :D

Blender was much easier for me to get to grips with, and I've been able to put together something I'm reasonably happy with. I'll be uploading it in the morning, and will welcome all feedback.

For anyone that uses Premier Pro out there, I wonder if you can answer a couple of queries that I have?

1) Normally, when I attempt to alter the brightness, the yellow line shown in the video remains the same colour. Instead, it's been changing to red - meaning that playback is more intensive / choppy, which is particularly annoying when trying to do transitions. Does anyone know why this is occurring?

2) The second minor issue concerns the time (indicated nearer the end of the video), which very often will move forward by one 60th of a second; however, lately it has been functioning differently, i.e. two / three clicks = 1/60th or 1/30th of a second. Although a very minor issue, it would be nice to know why this is happening. I should add that this particular problem isn't evident in the video, as the footage I used as an example showed the time 'movement' to be normal / as I prefer.

Boom, done. All feedback welcome :D

I liked it :) For a first video especially it seems like you're definitely off on the right track, your voiceover sounded confident and it seemed like you knew what you were talking about (a lot of people struggle on these points starting out).

If I had to be critical at all (and I think feedback is generally pretty useless otherwise) I would say that maybe if you could have included some sort of background music - nothing overpowering but a piece of music from the game or something which fits the theme of the game at a very low volume in the background... The lack of it doesn't ruin the video but I think having it would enhance it slightly. But yeah otherwise - good job!

^^ Agree with the above.

I've watched it a few times in different settings - on the tv, the pc through my mhead set, ear phones and on my phone/tablet.

Very easy to listen to and good audio work aswell.

Some nice backing music would work very very well with that IMHO

Also some sort of intro / outro aswell - nothing long a detailed but simple and clear I think works best IMHO

Thanks guys, very useful feedback, I'll make sure there is some appropriate background audio next time.

Do you have any recommendations for where to find some "calm" intro templates? I've been looking around, and everything seems to be epilepsy inducing with dubstep audio. I've been playing around with Blender to make something simple from scratch, but it's going to take a good while to make something high quality as I have no experience in animation.

Definitely try to steer clear of the very over-the-top things... I don't think it needs to be super complicated or anything... Some of the very over-used type of 3d-animation with pounding dubstep type of intros can supposedly risk turning people off of your video before they even get to the content!

As a random example if you've ever watched Nerd^3 (Nerd-cubed... not sure how best to write it!) His intro is basically just his logo on a black background, then the logo area becomes transparent (so you can see the start of the game footage through it) and grows bigger and bigger until it's gone and you're looking at the footage... Nice and simple, quick, and not too hard to do yourself...

I made all of our graphics myself - it's nothing super fancy but (hopefully) professional looking enough... Grab a copy of GIMP and get used to using transparency and layers etc. - as long as animated elements are on separate layers you can save them as separate images and then key-frame them in Blender (for instance the "2" in our logo is saved as a separate image and then I use keyframes on the "rotation" property in Blender to make it spin)
