Offline maps on iPad

I'm going on holiday to France with some friends and the place we're staying in doesn't have wifi. We've already made some rough plans for stuff we want to do, but I was thinking that it might be helpful having a proper up to date map of the area in case we decide to explore a bit. I don't really fancy messing about with massive paper maps in the car, and the 'explore map' feature on the car sat nav is pretty dated and useless, so I was thinking it might be best if I bring my iPad and use it as a map.

So, what's the best way to do this without Internet? I've heard you can cache maps on some apps but I've never done anything like that before and I'm not quite sure how it all works. I've currently got google maps and apple maps installed, don't mind installing another program but would rather avoid paying if possible - I've spent enough on the holiday!

Thanks :)

Cheers - the google maps cache doesn't give that large an area but the copilot app was exactly what I was looking for :)
