Offline Nav app?

Copilot is worth considering too. I got it when I needed a second device (TT on Android wasn't available then). I slightly prefer TT but Copilot is still very good.

Does TomTom Go show the speed limit for the road you're on? That was one of the main reasons I like & use Here.

Speed limit tracking is one of Tomtom Go's better unique features. IF you're in an average speed zone on a motrway it actually monitors your average speed and reports in on screen.

Both Tomtom apps, Navigon and Route 66 all display the speed limit.

Sorry to hijack your thread Peerzy; newbie question, I'm off driving round France, Switzerland, Germany and maybe Italy at the end of the month. Is it possible to avoid paying for data abroad with navigation? Could I simply download one of these apps before I go, then turn off data and rely just on the GPS connection for guidance? I'd have wifi access in the evenings to cache new maps.

Yes. Navfree, Here or Route 66 Navigate free 30 day trial (and download the maps before you go / in the evenings) would let you do it. Others will as well.

If you really want to ensure no data is used, run the phone in airplane mode.

I'd suggest going for an option with fully downloaded maps rather than trying to cache them.

just a word of caution, airplane mode may turn off GPS too, better to switch off mobile data (unless you can confirm GPS stays on with Airplane mode)

Another vote for HERE Drive, works well, worldwide offline maps available, based on Navteq maps and free! In fact buying a low end Windows phone for £60 and using Here Drive is cheaper and makes more sense than buying a dedicated Sat Nav! :)

Yes, I've used Here Drive for a couple of years now on my Windows phone and am really happy with it. It works perfectly off-line, although searching for a slightly obscure destination works better when it can search online as well. Of course HERE is available on Android as well now. It doesn't re-route for traffic, but for the OP's requirements I don't think that is an issue, and the apps that do re-route require a data connection anyway to do so.

I did have to purchase a worldwide licence though for use outside the UK, I don't know if that is still the case or not.
