I keep getting calls from 020 8763 4575 however when I pick up they hang up straight away. This has happened a few times.

I then yesterday got a text saying '[4 names of Uni housemates]. Please call CSL on 02087634536 quoting reference xxxxxxxx' and another this morning saying 'Hi this is Sam from CSL, I need to speak to you. Please call me on....'

Now this is clearly about debt and as far as I know we paid all our bills this year but there's always a chance we didn't or we still owe something and the various utility companies have no record of our home addresses. However, why are these guys pestering me and behaving like unprofessional morons. Why do they have to get me to initiate contact (is this some legal thing) if they need to speak to me why can't they ring me up and not hang up?

Have you lot heard of these guys? I think I'm going to completely ignore any further communication from them. Even if they're legitimate the way they go about their business is unacceptable.

i would ignore everything mate, if you know your all paid up then don't worry about it, just make sure you have no stray direct debits, if so get them cancelled

How do these rogue morons even get this sort of information?

I know for fact that all ours bills were sorted but the one where we might owe, albeit a tiny sum, is nPower.

the company you owe money to will sell off the debt to a collection agency after a while, then they try to recover it - pretty stupid to ignore them if you ask me, your credit rating will be shot completely if you don't do anything, although if it's got as far as a collection agency it probably is already! and if you know you owe someone a "tiny sum" why would you not just get it sorted out!?

My Experian credit rating is 999 which is the highest possible score.

We paid everything and told them the date we were moving out so I assume everything would have been sorted.

I can't believe this practice of selling debt isn't regulated.

They will be phoning up to see if you were sold a payment protection plan and offer to get your money back. Ignore 100%

The reason I assumed they were chasing me for money is the message is addressed to myself and my three housemates, in exactly the same order as they appeared on our utility bills.

For the sake of my credit rating I'd be willing to call them to see what they wanted. Do you pay all the bills? Is it possible (read : likely) that one of your housemates should have paid a bill and didn't?

I've had it before where I've paid the bill and it's still gone to debt collectors. Just had to tell them it was in dispute and pass the file back to British gas.

Oh and debt being passed on to a debt collector doesn't usually do anything to your credit rating. Only after it's been to court.

but not paying the original bills, and missing those payments will have some effect, along with having an unpaid debt marked on your file until you do something about it

Utilities aren't usually on the file and as such no missed payment. As utilities aren't a fixed amount or contract. Unlike mobile phone or loans.

quality, i'm off to cancel my utility direct debits!!

the op is only guessing this is for npower, so it would be sensible to actually confirm that before choosing to ignore the debt collectors, and if it is that why wouldn't the op pay the tiny amount, makes no sense whatsoever!

How does debt being passed off to a debt collector work, cant you just say that you never entered a contract with the third party debt collector and so dont have to pay them?

its a nice thought but I doubt it will stand up legally.
