My 530 has developed a bit of a misfire. After doing some digging, I find that there is a HUGE amount of suction from the filler and the dipstick rather than a gentle pressure. :( It also looks like its generating a smoke screen.

Does anyone have some lube? This will be on top of the £400 I have to find after a scrote drove into the side of my van...

/Rant

Sounds symptomatic of a knackered PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve. If so I wouldn't have thought it would be a particularly expensive fix.

530i with the M54 engine :( If I am lucky, its a split hose. If not, it could well be piston rings.

How could a split pipe or worn rings increase the level of vacuum in the crankcase?

Sounds a bit like a pipe under your manifold has cracked, probably one of those CCV pipes.

Whats the worry about, the M54 is embarrassingly easy to work on.

Not with hands the size of mine lol.

Im fairly sure its the CCV, as doing some reading up has the symptoms. The parts alone are £120 and then you have to remove the intake manifold after taking off the throttle body. Its possible to not have to take the intake off if you have lady hands, but I don't.

Then there is the possibility that it could also be the DISA valve. Another £100.

My 728i did this (different engine mind you) turned out to be a split hose, cost about £60 to get fixed by a garage.

Mine also misfired, but I'm a bit puzzled why a split vacuum hose would cause this.....

Well in my experience if the CCV system has gone, in any which fashion, then CC pressure has been positive not negative. Ie it starts to fart and blow out of the filler neck etc

Have you lost low rpm power?

No loss of power really unless you are under 1000 rpm where for a second or two its fine but then starts to shake and belch. On first startup everything is normal until youve driven off. Then if you come to a stop it misbehaves.

Thats interesting. How much pressure would you say is normal and what goes wrong to make pressure too high?

I reckon something is wrong with mine, just not right at idle.

Now thats odd. I took it tonight for them to have a quick look at it before we go commiting to buying any parts etc and they agreed with my assesment that its the CCV rather than the PCV or DISA. TBH I never thought about it being the PCV at the back of the engine, so tomorrow they are replacing the CCV and associated hoses.

The thing that makes me think its the CCV is that you can clearly hear a leak on the same side that the CCV and Disa is on, but I suppose that could just as easily be the PCV at the rear.

I really should have a smoke test done.

I took the DISA out of my z4 in about 15 minutes with basic tools the other week, Should be easy to check and test, just to rule it out.

It did seem a very poorly designed part so wouldn't be surprised if its gone belly up.
