Oh goody, injection in the spine, really looking forward to this ...

I couldn't feel my penis for about 10 hours, I was getting worried incase I never felt it again LOL

I had a cough when I had one of the epidural anesthetics and after the operation while waiting for the feeling to come back every time I coughed I peed all over.

There was one good side to this, I was getting quite irritated at being a grown man peeing myself and the nurse who kept coming back to clean me up gave me her number! and told me the nightclub she worked at so I could go see her when I was well again ;).

I don't think you want to meet up with a woman who is attracted to men peeing themselves unless you want things to get "freaky" that night.

Had the injection 3 times ... twice 'normal' and once under xray or something as it was guided in right into the disc area that was shattered.

The first two i was awake for, didnt hurt a bit... its like someone really pushing at your bone, its not that bad... didnt do a thing for me though in terms of relief.

And again the 3rd one which was meant to be better as it gets the steroid right into the area, I had strong pain relief (i was told as they were doing it, the same stuff the killed Michael Jackson :D)... anyway wasnt meant to knock me out.. did, all I remember is waking up to a cup of tea and toast in a hospital bed!

Surprisingly didnt work either.. had the surgery in the end, still not right to this day but what can you do, backs are backs.

Right, that's the surgeon appointment and pre-op tests done, now to wait for a time slot in the surgical list :)

Last time it was a bulge around the L5-S1 junction, this time he's fixing two pieces poking out of the L5, awesome.

Just seen this thread you have had it bad SB118. I have just seen the back specialist again on Monday and Booked me a MRI in tomorrow (private) this is the second time having a MRI first one hasn't shown anything but wants to do another on my hip area this time as I'm still having pain in my back. I was referred to the neurologist and had an Emg and said nerves are getting pinched on lumber 5!? Still having physio but no improvement. It really does get you down

Ring ring. "Hello it's your surgeons secretary here, we've had a cancellation, do you want your operation tomorrow?"

At least i won't have time for the fear to kick in i suppose.

surgeon went in and had a go at the same disc he operated on last time, and if this doesn't fix it then needs to back in on the disc above (did L4-L5 "trimming" and L5-S1 cleanup tiday) as there's loads of **** in there but the L4-L5 looked to be the most likely cause of trouble.

currently stretched out in the ward with my magic morphine button earning it's keep.

Some before and after shots.

Here i am rocking my "Derriford tramp stamp"...

Marked up so the surgeon doesn't forget what he's doing ....

Not eating breakfast right now are you?
Sure?

They even give me a special set of pliers for the nurse to use to take the staples out :)

Leg pain is totally gone (like last time) but my back is murdering me as every time i move i distress the wound.

Not been around the forum for a bit so a mini update, getting the staples out was "interesting", the tissue had grown over two of the staples so the nurse had to really dig in with the pliers to get a better grip

And the pain was back within six months.

Had MRI scan, physio, another MRI and finally the surgeon offered a procedure involving jacking apart the vertebrae and using metal plates to stop the joint from moving. Ideal but the recovery time was around 5 - 6 months and with the kids being young we just wouldn't have been able to cope around the house, and i opted for more physio.

That took the edge off things for a bit but the pain and restricted movement have got too much for me to handle, so i was referred back to the surgeon. More MRI, etc.

And there's nothing he can do. The nerve pain from the sciatica which ran down my leg has gone, it's just back pain. Which means they can't pin-point the site of the damage. If the leg pain was still present then it means the joint at (i think) L4-L5 is the problem, they go in and sort it, problem goes away. But that pain is gone and the MRI shows wear/damage in several location on my spine.

They could do the work on the L4-L5 and it make absolutely no difference, so surgery is out. So it's more physio and painkillers. And that's it.

Totally worth it for the free parking though.

What hospital you getting advice from mate?

Southampton have a guy called Evan Davies, who's done a lot of work on my dads back when it was debatable whether anyone would touch it as was so far gone. Had two arch laminoplasty operations 1 in the neck and 1 lower back and its helped him.

Of course not be for your issue but may be worth a second option? This guy does NHS and private.

My dad had to have his left knee, and right hip replaced in 2001, so on the morning of the op, he took a marker and had my mum write 'This One' with a tick on his left knee and right hip, and 'NOT This one' with a cross on his right knee and left hip.

Well, he wanted to write 'Not this one, idiot', but my mum wouldn't write that.

Anybody else had this done?

Because of my health boards woefully inadequate IT systems where so little of a patients records are available throughout the boards hospitals. The Anaesthetist in my forthcoming prostate operation suggestion that I go this route because she was uncomfortable about the safety aspects in placing the breathing tube in my throat given the restricted mouth opening I now have following cancer.
Even though I said that I had had breathing tube placement on several occasion's in the recent years because she could not look at the Anaesthetists notes she felt her only option was a spinal injection.
I pointed out that if she thought that I was going to be awake whilst someone did unspeakable thing to my man bits? She had another think coming. Fortunately we agreed on a fibre optic intubation.
Not the same procedure as yourself but I do believe it is painful getting an spinal injection but I am probably very wrong. Good luck to you on the day.

Plymouth, Derriford. Bloke is a navy surgeon, did my last two ops and my care in between (knows the right people to see in the physio dept.) He has asked me to keep him updated directly (rather than being referred by my GP again) if my symptoms change so he can re-admit me to his care without the n weeks wait for things to be processed if i go to my GP.
