Was my problem windows or with my HW?

Specs are the following

2 x 250GB Hdds (Prevoiusly raid 0) not anymore.
A8n32-SLi Deluxe (939) with x2 4200 (Now at stock)
2GB RAM Corsair CMX3500LLpro (Currently Default settings in bios) running at 2.7Volts
ATI 1950pro.
580watt PSU.

This morning I started my machine and it wouldnt boot into Windows, Safe mode or LKGC. No error messages the system just sat there whichever way it was started, just a cursor. No response from CTRL - ALT - DEL, however the mouse would still move... I really hate it when things like this happen as it gives very little clue where the source of the problem is. The install had only been running for one week, and had prevoiusly been plain sailing until then. I am using Windows Vista X64. At the time I am running two hard drives in Raid 0.

Due to the problems the first thing I did was to remove the array and I installed X64 Vista, back to one 250GB drive. For some reason I had to disconnected the second drive as it wouldnt reconise the correct boot device which was odd.

Basically as it stands I no longer trust my machine at present. I plan to run the Maxstor Maxblast tools, and Memtest has come up with No errors. so I cannot see any H/W fault so far. I also plan to run memtest and 3d Mark to check the performance is what it is expected to be.. The missus has had a bad day as Ive been like a bear with a sore head reinstalling windows and running updates. (I should really ghost the installation). I m really paranoid that this is gonna repeat itself. If it does the PC is probably gonna end up going out of the nearest window.

Could anyone shed any addition light?

No whistling while you work then :D;) You could run Prime95 to test your cpu stability and install core temp and make sure your temps are all good .Could be a flaky psu.

I had a very similar thing.

can i ask how long you left it on just the cuser before rebooting it again??

mine was stuck like that for about 7-10 min and then said 'configureing updates'!!!

tbh, I'd had my fill of vista and i downgraded back to xp pro - much happier with laptop performance now.

I'd suggest that it was something like that.

(but i have been known to be wrong in the past!!) ;)

I haven't moved away from XP because of a lot of reasons.

I rely on my system for email, browsing, my live stream etc.

I will be moving to Vista mid 2008 if I see some improvements. I do like the look of it and hope that the final release of SP1 improves stability and brings in some extra features.

I would stick with XP for a while, or at least dual boot. If you have an XP Licence that is!

I went and had breakfast so about 20 mins

TBH I purchased this copy of Vista for 80 pounds as I got it at the time of realease. This would mean I have to purchase XP as they cant get it right, Seems they know how to make money. Figers crossed, its now working ok with minimal apps installed, fingers crossed it was probably an issue with raid.

OEM is fine.

You can downgrade from vista business and ultamate to XP pro/tablet or home for free.

note; you can do the same from xp pro to win 2k if you wanted.
