Oh no! Another tyre question. More of a technical question though.

Hello!

I'm looking to upgrade my tyres on the ST to Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3's. I've read on the internet that you can safely oversize the tyres by 20mm, so I have looked at a slightly wider, 215 profile (10mm bigger).

My std. size is 205/40/R17. The price of the tyre for this size is £89.10 per corner.

Yet, the 215/40/R17 price is £82.50 per corner! Wow, cheaper and slightly fatter looking tyre. :)

Just wanted to check really if this is an ok thing to do really, I've read threads on owners clubs, etc where people have done this and not noticed any problems.

The technical question....

EAGLE F1 GS-D3 215/40 ZR17 83Y BSW

Now the parts I can understand are:-

1. The name - EAGLE F1 GS-D3
2. 215/40/R17 - The size
3. 83 - The load rating
4. Y - The speed rating
5. BSW - "Black Side Wall"

But what is the "Z" part in ZR17???

At a guess I would say Zero, that's what mine stand for.

This means it has quite high speed limits something like 150 or 160.


If you're confident change the tyres, I would stick with standard.

I dont know where you would stand with a big insurance claim if you have tyres that arent manufacturer recommended sizes on standard rims. It would be worth checking out before fitting them.
 
If you have and accident, Insurers won't inspect the car and say "Right, his profiles are 215 instead of 205, we're not paying out.

If they do they obviously want to hang on to their money too much.
 
why would you want to go larger? that change will also increase the height of the sidewall, not sure why youd want that

I'm wasnt really thinking to much about them paying out for the car as such. If you have a major accident and end up in court you can be sure that it would be come up.

yup, i thought it would be more than that, 4mm is nothing

the speedo will be reading 1.3% slower due to the altered gearing. itll save £28.

the way my mind works, id be going down a size :D
 
They can look bulgier when you look at the car front on which can look really stupid on some cars. I'd always just fit the correct tyre size for the rim, its not work risking upsetting the handling for the sake of a few quid.
 
To keep keep the correct sidewall height, you should drop the profile by a size when you increase the width. Try 215/35's.
