Well guys.

I was overjoyed with my 7970. Until the main game I play - world of warcraft started locking my system up.

I've tested multiple other much more graphically intensive games (skyrim, Batman arkham city, Bf3) and they are all fine.

I've done some research around and it seems there is a whole load of AMD users with the same problems :( with wow / diablo 3.

I thought i'd switch over to AMD as great price on the card but now i'm sorry I changed it seems AMD has driver issues still to this day :(.

Hoping i'll be able to RMA this to overclockers and pay the extra for a 680. Just received it last thursday.

I'll return it. I've returned things to overclockers in the past and had them returned back to me under DSR. Apprently box damage etc.

Can they do this?

I'm going to ensure I send it special delivery and photograph the packaging etc.

What drivers are you using? Try rolling back to 12.4 and see if you experience the same issue in WoW.
using 12.6.
Frankly i've been a nvidia user for 5+ years and not had a single driver issue. Switch to AMD and get driver issues on the main game I play. It sucks. How can they bring out a product that has issues on a 7 year old game?
Left me with a bitter taste in my mouth :(.

The other game works fine. But wow is the biggest MMO to date, still has over 12 million subscribers world wide. You would think a company like AMD would get its priorities straight. Had I not had this problem I wouldn't have switched back to nvidia, spent an extra £90 and it wouldn't have been a lost sale for AMD. Seems a lot of players are also having issues with diablo 3.

My point is been with nvidia for 5 years, never a single driver issue. Before that had an ATI with driver issues. 5 years on expect the driver issues to be well resolved. But jesus no. The more I read the more problems people have with AMD 7900 series in particular, having to swop out all different driver versions to get games working. I mean come on, I expected this crap back in late 1990's but in 2012?

If you get lockups, the first thing to do, is look at your own system.

Test your OC as I bet thats the source of your issues.

I tried moving back to stock settings and swopping my 570 back in. All great. Then I looked into the AMD 7970 problems and found countless others with the same problem.
Even OCUK mentioned to me on the phone AMD have many driver issues compared to NVIDIA.

So problem solved. Should never have wasted my time buying this 7970. Never ever again.

If it was my PC why would it work fine with my GTX 570 in? The only time i'm having the problem is with the 7970 -_-. And I frankly cba messing around installing / uninstalling drivers left right and centre. I've been a Nvidia user for years now and never had a problem running ANY games. And I always update to the latest driver.

Trawling the web there seems to be many more people with AMD issues than Nvidia.

Why did you not get another Nvidia card ?

There are many people using 79xx cards with no issues and there are many people using 6xx cards with issues. Changing the GPU from green to red usually involves a bit of work and cleaning up as does going the other way.

I noticed the 7970 was only £323 reduced - read a lot of positive things about it. The minimum 680 was around £80 more at the time.

Right, the grass is not always greener it seems. I received my 680 today, fully uninstalled the AMD drivers / software and put the card in. Kept getting constant BSOD in windows installing the card. Had approx 15 reboots trying to download the driver.
Eventually managed to get the driver installed. Launched a game, instant BSOD. Heaven benchmark blue screened after approx 10 seconds.

Am I missing something here, just extremely unlucky? or have I got a faulty card?
Back to the 7970 now and all good.

Have you tried testing your memory and Hard drives? Seems strange you are having massive problems with both and yet can be something else.

Yep run memtest, but not tested hard drive (although it's a new SSD under 40 hours use).
Running memory at stock speeds.

Thanks guys. Used driver sweeper and done a fresh install of the AMD card. All good so far. But need more time to tell. Just ran a full heaven with everything set to max.

Bite the bullet and go for a fresh install of Windows (a pain but this is what I would do). Try what Borley said first though and run driver sweeper to clear out any old drivers.

You sir are a legend. Driver sweeper has sorted it. Got the 680 running stable now (or so it seems) ran a full benchmark on Heaven and had wow running for 5 mins :).

Still I think after all this i'm gonna RMA the 680. The ATI beta drivers seem to be fine on wow and I don't see the point spending the extra £90 on the nvidia.

So... did you go from a 570 to a 7970 to a 680, without doing a clean Windows install between either of the changes
Did a fresh install for the 7970 mate. Then went back to the 570 when I had driver issues on the 7970.

Guys everything is perfect now. I'm running on the 680 with no problems at all. Used this program called driver sweeper and took out all the AMD traces. Fresh install and all up and running perfect. Got the card running oc'ed I'm very impressed with the performance and all in all feel it's worth the extra cash. Not to mention the thing runs like 15c lower than my AMD and it's at 1200mhz speed! 125 more than my 7970.

After almost two weeks of use I haven't had a single problem running any game on my 680.
Wow runs perfect.

I'm quite amazed at just how cool the card runs in comparison to the 7970. It's almost 300mhz faster and 10-25c cooler.

Peformance seems better too. Gonna try overclocking it further this weekend.

Glad to hear your issues were resolved.

You didn't buy a 680 to just play WoW though did you?

hehe god no,

So far i've completed Arkham Asylum, Shogun total war 2 (campaign) playing Arkham City, Skyrim, Civ V, Max Payne 3(looks amazing full detail max settings) and Battlefield 3 atm.

Hmm maybe, but planning on SLIng in the future this time. And I always hear about fewer issues with SLI than crossfire.
