oh no! what's wrong with my pc?

Assuming that the motherboard supports PCI-Express (and not AGP) and you're not interested in gaming then just buy the cheapest HD5450 card. It's not brilliant but it will give a non-blocky output

how would i know? given what gpu i've got atm what is the type i need?

would a hd5450 card be worse performance then what i've got now? if so i'm shocked as the x1900 is so old and no longer supported, only does dx9 etc. how would the cheap cards perform for light photoshop (only web designing)?

Depends on the motherboard chipset. PCI Express started to replace AGP for graphics cards in 2004, and there was a couple of year overlap. The X1900 was available in both types. 99.9% of boards only had one type fitted.

How to find out which type. Hmm, there's a few ways off the top of my head :

1) Have a look around in the BIOS for settings pertaining to PCI-E or AGP.

2) ID the mainboard via the BIOS string on the POST screen or if you can get into Windows use a utility such as CPU-Z.

3) Whip the graphics card out and look at the connector. There will be pics of the slots on Wikipedia etc.

ok will have a look now.

looking on ocuk page looks like a pci express card is on offer this week which iirc runs out tonight?

at £33.00 would this be decent enough? assuming my mobo supports pci-e which i'm fairly certain it does but will confirm now

mobo is Asus A8R-MVP

This week only run from Wednesday now, so you have a week to decide :)

But the card will be fine for a display adapter :)

Edit: looks like PCI-E, the card should work fine.

As well as the methods quoted above, you can also look at the slot on the mobo.
An AGP slot is usually Brown in colour and shorter than PCI-express x16:

If you read my posts i was on the same lines and was only suggesting if he was to secure his data he can mess it up to his hearts content to relieve any possible doubt in his hardware or software.

Glad you are on the mend Mammalian. :)
