Anyone have any experience of these?

For those who are not familiar it is a suction device that fits down the dipstick tube and sucks the oil out.

It causes a lot less mess and the old oil is held in a container ready for disposal.

I am thinking of getting one as I am tired of crawling under cars, getting my hands covered in oil. Also looks like they could be useful for people who are not suppose to do car maintenance in the grounds of their property.

Anyone used them/have any opinions?

That looks like a great invention, if it works well and was to get all of the oil out i would think of buying one. I have never heard of or seen them before though.

Not used one myself but have come across them when having UPS generators serviced, as Yarwood says and they seem to work well there.

Used one for my RX8, filter is on the top so never needed to go under the car, also use it on my Focus, filter is at the front and easy to change without lifting the car, makes the whole oil change much quicker.

Some cars require it as well, some newer designs don't have sump plugs, also handy for boats.

ive no idea how well it would actually remove the junk that is suspended in the oil but it would make the job easier.

however, youll have no idea whether its actually picking up the oil from a good location (ie could be big pockets of oil left behind) and will the junk suspended in the oil just settle at the bottom of the sump because it is being removed slower. its not had to drain it properly so ill just continue to raise the car in the once every few months

machinemart used to have a range in their catalogues, no idea if they still do though

If the oil is changed regularly it's pretty much a non-issue. I wouldn't recommend it for people doing their own 'extended service' intervals when the oil is more like marmite.

It actually got as much or more oil out of the sump on my Fiat Coupe than I could from using the sump plug, though that likely to vary between cars. You do need to get the oil hot however, or it takes a very long time.

These are brilliant, had one for my old Rover 75. Plus the oil filter is of course in the BMW location - accessible from the bonnet.

Oil change in 5 minutes? Yay!

Now I have to dick about under the car, fight with a can-style filter and torque a sump plug. Bad times.

I never really considered an oil change that difficult or dirty anyway. Rubber gloves and a pan and its a 20 minute job.

I can see how this would be useful on the rare occasion though.

Doesn't seem to matter how much I attempt to line up the plug and the catch-pan, I always miss and end up with a oil on the driveway until such time as I can move the pan.

Granted, it's not much, but it's still a pain.

Buy a bigger pan ;)

This piece of kit would help with the mess I always make transferring the oil from the pan to whatever I'm disposing of it in.

I used to use one on my Octavia because with a liitle bit of 'go go gadget arms' I was able to do an oil and filter change without lifting the car.

Perfect if you have a gravel drive which makes jacking it up a PITA.

Judging by the volume I got out there was little, if anything, left behind in the sump.

My only gripe was the poor seal between the tank and the pump so I put a few wraps of PTFE tape round it.

I usually get it in the pan, but it also usually ends up running down my arm as I remove the sump plug :(
