hi guys

i checked the oil this morning......it was very little, just above the lump bit at the bottom , way below the MIN marking. topped up about 1.5 litre of oil. went up to middle of MIN and MAX marking.

wondering why the oil warning light never lit up, it does lit up everytime i turn the key. once started the engine, light goes off.

maybe the oil level sensor is broken?

am a little worried :(

cheers

Is it a low oil level or low oil pressure light?

If it comes on with ignition but goes off when the engine is started it sounds more like a low pressure light than a low level.

The dipstick only reads the top 1.5l or so of a ~4.0l sump so even if there wasnt anything on the dipstick there could still be more then enough for the pick-up pump to suck up and the crank to create pressure on.

If you bothered to read the little book that came with the car, you'd realise you have to check the level yourself.

If 1.5l took it to halfway, you've been running around on 65% approx of the oil capacity. Well done.

Top up and hope for the best, you might as well top it up to full and keep an eye on the usage by checking the level weekly.

If the oil warning light didn't light up and your engine isn't rattling like a bag of spanners, you've probably gotten off relatively lightly this time. But you'll check it more regularly in future, won't you? ;)

last time i checked was about 3 weeks ago, it was full to MAX marking, gotta be bad leaking somewhere. no blue smoke or mayo stuff.

Remember to check the oil after the engine has been off for at least 10 minutes and on a flat and level ground, parked by the side of the road is usually too cambered to give an accurate reading. In those cases it can show minimum reading when the oil is at the max or vice versa

Checked the oil this morning, it dropped from middle to just above of min marking so I guess about 100ml. Can't find any oil stain anywhere under the car where I parked.

Something very wrong :(

Sorry if this sounds stupid, but you are using the dipstick correctly aren't you, i.e. taking it out, wiping it off and then putting it back in for a few seconds before taking it out again? If you don't do this you get an artificially high reading if the engine has been running recently.

did you check it whilst warm yesterday and whilst cold this morning? you need to be doing this correctly. With BMW you're supposed to get the car fully up to temperature, park on the flat, turn it off and wait 5 minutes for an accurate reading.
