Been loitering and reading and counting my very limited budget and the conclusion is I have to retain my 17" Iiyama CRT, re-use my old CDRW and DVD drives, and try to spend under £500..

From other posts Ive got this far:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4400+ (Socket 939) - Retail (ADA4400CDBOX) (CP-127-AM) £134.95
Asus A8N-SLi SE nForce4 SLi (Socket 939) PCI-Express Motherboard (MB-101-AS) £54.95
Antec SLK3800BUK Black Quiet Midi Tower Case - 400W SmartPower PSU (CA-048-AN) £54.95
Seagate Barracuda 7200.9 160GB ST3160811AS SATA-II 8MB Cache - OEM (HD-093-SE) £34.95

Which takes me to: £279.8 + VAT = £328.77

Have opted for 160Gb/8Mb Cache drive for cost reasons and cause I have a 160Gb Maxtor USB2 external drive and my old 160Gb IDE mounted USB2 external as well. Whether this is wise? but money counts and I opted to go for the 4400+.

So im left with RAM (1Gb assumed) and Graphics to sort and only a £170 approx to play with :( .

Any suggestions re RAM / Graphics or rebalancing the whole build in budget. Should I reduce processor spec and use cash on graphics

In regards to usage its basically work, family photos and casual gaming. My back catelogue of unplayed games includes Half 2 and Far Cry. As I play far less these days next purchase will be Neverwinter Nights 2 or Oblivion.

dont get the 4400, get the 3800 and do a bit of light clocking

Do you need an sli mobo?

Gfx wise get the 7300 gt (ddr3 version) As for the ram 1gb will be fine, id actually go for some value ram.

Thanks Trigger interesting read. Now I need to trust myself to build it :) .

Worked in IT for ages and taken all sorts of things apart, never actuall built a machine from scratch though and this times its my money lmao.

Time to read the sites very useful guides I think.
