I am in need of a new build, because http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18011581. See page two for the brutality my PC has suffered.

I have a perfect case a sound graphics card, plenty of high speed RAM, two in good condition harddrives but an out of date AMD athlon 3800 and a broken motherboard. Also my current 400w Akasa PSU wont support quadcore..

My budget is £200, could push it to £250 i suppose because i need a new PSU.

So, I'm looking for Quadcore, decent mobo with 2.1v for ram :p and a quality PSU to power it all :)

Pweaaaaaaaase

Hows this? Uses the newer Phenom2 tricore CPU, which should be good for your needs, and the PSU is on TWO

AMD Phenom II X3 Tri Core 720 Black Edition 2.8GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail £120.74 (£104.99)
Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3 AMD 770 (Socket AM3/AM2+) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard + Battlefield 2: Complete Edition Game £69.99 (£60.86)
OCZ ModXStream Pro 500w Silent SLI Ready ATX2 Modular Power Supply £51.99 (£45.21)
Sub Total : £211.06
Shipping cost assumes delivery to UK Mainland with:
DPD Next Day Parcel
(This can be changed during checkout) Shipping : £9.50
VAT is being charged at 15% VAT : £33.08
Total : £253.64

Why get the tricore when theres an intel quadcore for the same price?

Here is a spec using a quad core and a very solid motherboard. It is definitely over budget, so you could drop down to a p43 board if needed, but this x48 is a great deal.

Also, do you have a s775 compatible cooler? If not, that would also be needed. This is a good one for cheap.

hmmmm thanks. i take it thats the best i could get for my money then?

it's £30 over including postage, due to the processor and mobo being more expensive due to your wanting quad core

edit: agreed about the x48 being a cracking bargin

I take it the standard coolers/heatsinks that ship with the quadcores will suffice?

Just a heads up but both those builds use OEM chips so you'd need a decent cooler as they don't come with one. But like cmndr_andi says the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro would be a good choice if you're not heavily overclocking and it beats the stock one regardless.

If you're not overclocking a retail cooler does the job - but they're oem so no cooler is supplied,

But if you're getting the Asus PQ5 or Gigabyte X48 - i would spend a little more for a third party cooler (£20'sh will do it on a budget) and know that you have the oppurtunity to clock it comfortably.

its not the same price though is it, the 6700 is £20 more, and the mobo another 5-30, also theres the fact AMD are still producing chips which are AM2+/AM3 compatible where as intel have stopped production on socket 775, so the AMD offering is more likely to be able to be upgraded in a year or 2 where as the intel one will need to be binned and rebuilt from scratch again
Added to that Im sure the tricore will be good enough, as well as being clocked slightly quicker on stock, it also is the black edition with unlocked multiplier making OCing easy

Spot on! 720>q6700

I have to agree with 95trifles - that to stay within your budget a X3 is the best choice.

However, if you wait and find the extra £70 - the q6700 + cooler is the best option. The core 2 quad gives more than enough power for modern games, and the extra core will start to be utilised as games become more heavily multi threaded.

If i go the AMD route i have a perfectly good artic cooler AM2 socket on the old rig. I will need thermal paste thought won't i?

So with my budget, and the fact that i already have an artic cooler 7 i should get the tri core build?

I just never hear good things about AMD :/

a year ago AMD had fallen quite far behind, but with their new phenom 2's out they're giving intel a good run for their money again, imo you should get the tri core yes, but you'll prob get a 50/50 split of arguments for each, your call
Edit: If you want to have a read of this roundup of CPU's, very thorough, if you can be bothered to read it all, lol

Thrifles is right - AMD or INTEL, with your budget, there's not a lot in it. It comes down to what you can afford and what you're happiest with.

Think im going with the AMD build. I can't help thinkg tri core is just wrong sometimes :D

Dual, Quad, 8score. No odds :D

It's gna be £260 inc the thermal paste.

Whats this im reading about the tri cores are actually quad cores with just one turned off? :D
