Old £20 notes

Banks will change any pound sterling as long as it hasn't been tampered with.

I doubt anyone would accept it. I tried to top up my Oyster card last week with two old £5 notes and the machine didn't accept it. It was not until I asked the cashier that I realized they weren't legal tender anymore.

It does, the Bank of England will always take any note, you can even take shilling notes there and get money.
hrrrm, did not know that, i thought the old (old) £20 (and other older notes) were no longer accepted anywhere other than the bank of england in london?
Perhaps you need to agree to agree, since you're both saying the same thing. The Bank of England will accept and exchange genuine English banknotes in perpetuity. Retail banks do not have to (and will not) do this.

By previous estimates, the revised series E £20 won't go out of circulation until at least sometime in mid-2009. Banks will change them for a while after that, and then it's off to the Bank of England with you. So, you've got a few years yet. :)
