Hi

My main computer is an Athlon 1900+XP on an Abit KR7A.

Now I don't intend to upgrade it (as work have given me a lovely Centrino- powered lappy!!)and it does everything I want it to just fine, but the CPU is FAR too hot/ noisy!!!

In this day and age it must be possible to pick up a CPU that can run virtually silently and cooly for a few pennies, no?

Any reccommendations please?

Thanks

So what you're looking for is a quiet CPU heatsink/fan?

The Thermaltake Big Typhoon is a really good Socket A cooler, and if you run the fan on a low speed it will be very quiet. The Titan Vanessa is also very good. :)

No The CPU runs WAY too hot... I want something cooler to fit that board...The cooler is a Zalman Flower

Well I got this when the Athlon XPs first came out and all I can say is it runs hot and is too noisy :(

This is about the CPU (I want to replace that) not the cooler please move back  :)

It's the cooler that makes the noise. If you went for a faster cpu then you would be getting more heat. Anyway Socket A cpu's are no longer in production so you are looking at second hand from ebay. You will pay a very large premium on there for a faster AMD Athlon XP cpu.

Are you sure you have the cooler fitted correctly with a good thermal paste such as AS5? What's your case cooling like? Do you have fron/side intake fans and rear exhaust fans? If you don't then that would cause your cpu to run hot. If you need a quieter cooler then either of the ones the guys mentioned above will do the trick and give better cooling too. Especially the Big Typhoon which is one of the best.

Should probably have put it in the the CPU section then, no?

2600+ with 266FSB will be the fastest it supports I think, which means T-bred core. They run quite hot so you will need a better/quieter cooler as well.

The speed of the 1900 is fine I just want something to run cooler as my CPU is one of the first hot athlon XP's

And this thread was moved from CPU by someone!

if you are using that `flower` h/s it is pants(well it was for me.i used one for about 3 weeks before throwing it away)
seriously get one of the recommended NEW h/s mentioned above, much better heat transfer effectiveness than that flower meaning lower temps

My Athlon is a tbred though isn't it? Aren't these know for their high running temps?

Thanks

But your motherboard only supports 266FSB CPUs meaning either Tbred or palomino which run just as hot.

Early Athlon XP-m 2600+ had a 266FSB afaik but trying to find one might be a bit difficult, why not just buy a new cooler?

Palominos were hot. But regardless, I've managed to keep most of the socket A CPUs I had at ~50C load with stock cooling (AS5 instead of the pink gunk though).

That is the heatsink I was referring to previously.

Eh so the CPU itsself is making the noise.
No but I was thinking about replacing the CPU with a cooler running one, thus reducing the amount of noise produced when cooling it due to being able to use a quieter fan.

Ok thanks. Really I want to eliminate noise as much as possible.

Is there anything on the market that runs about the same speed as mine and is passively cooled?

If you must replace the CPU, look for the T-bred mobiles...you might be able to run an XP-M 1500 without a fan
