Old Computer to New Computer

Have just built myself a new machine, going from an Athlon 3700+ and XP to a shiny new Phenom II BE550 (unlocked to four cores and running at 3.6Ghz) and Win 7.

Yet I find a certain reluctance to use it. I always suffer this when changing computers. I type this on my old trusty one. It's like an old jumper, comfy, cosy and an old friend. The new one is, well, newer, faster, quieter and superior in almost every respect and yet I'm dreading the old routine of having to find and download all the stuff I have on this one, and am finding every excuse not to get on with it.

Ah well, I guess in time I'll feel the same about the new one when the time comes. :)

I know the feeling mate, it's difficult to change when your so comfortable how you are.

Here's what I reccomend doing.

1. Put a sticky pad and pen next to your keyboard
2. Every time you open a program on your old PC, write it on the sticky pad
3. At the end of a series of days, find, install and finalise all the listed things on your new PC
4. Take the HDD out your old PC and put it into your new one as a secondary storage drive
5. After a few weeks, once your sure you no longer need any data on your old HDD, format it, or just unplug it.

Makes the transition a bit easier :) Pretty weird to get such an improved machine but not want to use it though mate!

Lol, it's not that I don't 'want' to use it, I'm just dreading the thought of having to find my way around Win 7 and install all the progs I use all over again.

I know it won't be so bad but I'm getting too old for all this technology malarky :)

XP, we got on very well and I use Win 7 at work so it's not a total new thing, didn't stop me spending 20 minutes the other night trying to find the email prog in 7 before discovering it doesn't come with one!!!

just take a screenshot of your old PC's desktop and use it to find and install software on your new PC

you can import firefox bookmarks etc...doesn't take long

How would taking a screenshot of the desktop help? Mine lists the recycle bin and a .rar file, most people have 1 or two shortcuts, it doesn't list all your programs!

7 is not a huge leap from XP usability wise, just a lot flashier and with new features, most of the old stuff is pretty easy to find for an avid XP user
