i want to get a old console for my 7 year olds bedroom

xbox / ps2 or gamecube?

which is best?

value?
game catalog?
best games?

got a ps3 and wii downstairs but never had any of previous generation

can you still get hold the games for them are any new games released?

Well a wii can play GC games on it and assuming you got a 6ogb ps3 which can play ps2 games on it. I would say xbox :p
However if your ps3 can't play ps2 games then i would buy the ps2 instead due to the many, many, many games available.

The above post says it exactly, there is still an extensive games catalogue for the PS2 and Xbox all for cheap.
But do your lad a favour get him a SNES/N64 or even older and let him grow up with the retro goodness i did! :D

Any of them; if you are willing to pay. They were all fairly solid consoles with a good bunch of games. The thing is you can play a LOT of old Xbox titles on the 360 now and all the GC titles on the Wii. Just the PS2 ones that you have to download I think, or have one of those PS3's that can play the PS2 discs.

To summarize, it probably isn't worth buying a new old console since they cost so much and the new ones can play most of their games.

I was talking about 6th gen by the way.

Mega-drive for the win if anything less! :p

As has been said, the PS2 is pointless if you have the backward compatibility, and the Xbox is pointless if the games you're after are supported on the 360. The GC is utterly pointless no matter what, as all you need are Gamecube controllers and the Wii will do the rest.

+Mario64 or Donkey Kong. That's the major kid-friendly console genres covered nicely :)

With the N64/SNES etc there's the added bonus of durable media. Not to cast any aspersions on your child, but when I was 7 years old I was kinda clumsy/careless and probably would have scratched discs up beyond repair. And the old cartridge machines themselves are more reliable in the long-term as well.

Get him a Master System 2.

It was my first console as a child and playing games like Renegade, Shinobi, Desert Strike and The Ninja when you're 7 or 8 is awesome :D

Okay maybe not The Ninja, that damn game...

Dreamcast dude. You'd be mad to get any of those other consoles.

If you get somthing old, get somthing with original games that don't age. Unlike halo 1 which looks like poo compared to halo 3.

Out of those I would say PS2. They still release a few games for it and many shops still have a PS2 section. If I was buying one. I'd want one with 20+ games for about £40. If you buy just the console or console + 2 games, you will soon clock up some spending on it. Also try to get one with at least 2 controllers and anything else you will need.

I would prefer to get either an Xbox 360 Arcade or a Nintendo Wii. At least with the Xbox, if he really takes to it, you can buy a harddrive for it now that they have been reduced quite a bit.

Modded X-Box's are brilliant - can place games onto a hard drive, upgrade the hard drive and run emulators (like SNES Megadrive Amiga etc) and stuff. You can perform a soft-mod as well, without the need of a mod chip. Games second hand all go for next to nothing.

Do a search for XBMC and read what I mean.

So I say X-Box. Massive games catalog with fun multiplayer split screen games like Crash Racing and Micromachines.
