old crt on a new system?

do you need a new monitor for a new system as im running 64 bit xp on an oldish 19inch crt and my screen looks like its flickering as it would as if a mobile was near it well not that bad but its noticable and what woudl *** best res be?

anything up to 1600x1200, but lower than that i think. 1280x1024?

1280x1024 was usually the native res for 19" CRT monitors. As for the flickering, maybe the refresh rate is set incorrectly or something?

Yeah sounds like the refresh rate is too low, set it to 85 Hz or above. 1280*1024 / 1280*960 is probably the best res for a 19". At 1600*1200 many people find text too small.

No reason why an old CRT shouldn't work just fine on a new system.

The beauty of the CRT monitor is that there is no such thing as a native res. A TFT can only dream of doing this. Any res (providing it is capable of running at that res) will work on a CRT. Obviously, some resolutions look better to some people, but of course that is subjective. As an example, I run my 19" CRT at 1020x768. To me, that is the perfect res.

i have a 15" 1998 ibm g50 monitor connected to my rig atm
the reason for this is because my samsung had a dead pixel festival last week
so yeah
crysis
on a 10 year old monitor

It works fine on a new system. Indeed, as been said, increase your refresh rate. The higher the better, but not all monitors can handle it very high and if your monitor is REALLY REALLY old then watch out cause setting to high refresh rate might actually destroy them..

My 21" Dell P1130 and my IBM P275 21" both do 1600x1200 @ 100Hz which is great

but I run 1280x960 @ 120Hz which is even better.

I doubt you'd notice the 20Hz unless you're running in vsync

I bought a Dell P1130 off the bay last week (£45 delivered). They're superb monitors, really clear and great black depth, plus motion is liquid smooth. Much easier on the eyes than the last Viewsonic CRT I had too. Definitely a better screen for gaming than my Dell 2007WFP LCD - Bioshock looks twice as good.

You have to remember that CRT is a totally mature technology. It was improved to a point where it couldnt really be improved upon. LCD tech is nowhere near as developed. This is what stops me from getting rid of my Sony CRT. Whenever I compare it with an LCD screen, the LCD comes off 2nd best. What favours LCD screens is their small footprint (space saving), low power usage, low weight/space hence cheaper to ship/store and therefore can be sold at a lower price.

Its a shame that CRT has been phased out. I would love to buy a 40" CRT TV, but unfortunately they dont sell them anymore in the UK.
