Old Crt screens?

well im not too clued up about monitors.
the 17" LG studioworks 700s, it's max display is 1280x1024@60hz and it goes up to 85hz
the HD4870 max res is 2560 x 1600
reckon it will support it because im buying a graphics card today...

The maximum resolution you will be able to use is in this case limited by the monitor, 1280x1024@60. You will not be able to max out the resolution of the video card but whatever settings you currently use should work fine with the 4870. To be honest the 4870 is probably overkill for a 17" crt, but you should be able to run with very high graphics settings and if this makes you happy then who am I to argue?

well, iv got the 4870... and when i power on everything turns on... fan on graphics etc. but the screen shows an amberlight meaning its not got a signal.

First guess: Switch everything off, connect to the other dvi port on the GPU and try again. I do remember some reports of something similar in another thread.

You did remove all your old drivers before fitting the new card ?

tried connecting to other port. my guess is that its the converter... or the pci-e slot. its a new computer so theres no drivers installed. ??

just googled 4870 no display, among the highlights:

Power cycle the monitor
Double check all components are properly seated
Double check that all required power connectors are in place. 4870 x2, mb ??
What are the LED's on the gpu doing ?
Gigabyte motherboards appear problimatic
Check psu

etc. Try the above, including the google :)

Have you got all the graphics card's power connectors connected? (don't look at me like that)

Is the VGA-DVI adapter *firmly* connected? Quite easy to make them loose, huge fiddly booggers.

well iv just re-seated the card and three lights flash when i turn on.
i read in a similiar forum that this is a standard test ?
The VGA-DVI adapter is as firm as firm can be !... : (

Just for reference here are the LED codes. If all go out then I'm afraid it's back to the previous list and google :(

LEDS on HD4870 cards

D1601 - Red LED On, shows critical temperature fault

D1602 - Red LED On, shows External power connector A was removed

D1603 - Red LED On, shows External power connector B was removed

D601 - Red LED On, shows critical Core power fault

i have 3 lights that flash when power on:
D1601
D1602
D1603
isnt this a saftey test?
what do you suggest? i buy a new monitor?
