diesels are discussed a fair bit on here. the bulk of my experience with the dark side has been with VAG PD diesels. on the whole theyre bullet proof. yes theyre a bit rough around the edges, not the most refined going, but theyre so simple that a five year old could maintain them

the only downside i can see with this engine is that in the longitudinal layout a clutch change would be dear.

they dont have silly injectors that fail. the turbos dont fail. even the DMFs seem to last.

get one in a golf and you wont even have to worry about clutch costs.

so from going from near the bottom of the barrel... i think these are a bargain bucket blinder

Surely the bigger downside is that you need to drive around in a shabby shed from the early 90's, given that complete minter examples of utterly boring diesel hatchbacks are hardly common.

Sure it saves money but so does going on camping holidays in Devon instead of flying somewhere good.

Edit: Wait you are talking about PD's? I thought you were on about old school stuff. Surely the Turbos go bang on PD's as well? And the cars the PD's are fitted in are hardly great are they, the few good cars they are found in are ruined by the presence of said PD engine :p

yup, the old pd lump

the cars arnt great but theyre pocket money cars now. but compared ot other pocket money diesels... these are less of a liability

the last pd i owned (years ago) was close to 160k and was flawless

even now, when stuff goes wrong theyre so basic theyre a doddle to fix

I would argue the case if the 1.9XUD found in many peugeot's and citroens - if you are talking liability in terms of just the engine (as opposed to the whole car) then they XUD is extrmemly reliable.
