Old drive winding me up

I have an old maxtor drive from around the time quantum went bust and maxtor bought them out. Its a d540x which I bought new along with another one. Some time ago I stupidly did a daft thing which caused it too wreck loads of my data. Ever since then its been slowly killing itself with remapped sectors so I took hard drive regenerator too it. I left it on there for hours and seemed to be making fairly good progress until I got fed up and decided to try another time and turned the pc off. Now the drive wont format, I cant get hard drive regen to even scan it... according to what ive sussed out its ata locked, as in the password option has been enabled... what do I do? Do I bother trying to unlock the dam thing or shall I just mount it on the wall as a fancy clock or door stop?

Have you searched the Maxtor website for a default password for the ata lock?

No I havent, I wasnt sure if they would freely give out info like that. Im not sure if its worth bothering tbh as the drive isnt that big, its the fact that its been locked thats winding me up... I cant suss out how it got locked in the first place.
