Looking to replace our kitchen light - just had a quick look at the existing wiring for it and it's a bit of a mess. So I'll leave it until tomorrow (light is fading!)

Currently the light only uses neutral/live, but I've noticed that there's a connector block with:

Neutral (blue), Live (1x red) both currently used by existing light, but also:

Earth (nothing unusual, but also 3x random red cables.

The 3 red cables come out of the ceiling void - no idea what they're for for but they're not connected up to anything for the existing light, is it possible that there was an additional light at some point in the room that it was connected off of?

None of this will affect what I'm doing, just confused by these random red cables! It's a very old building though!

Standard loop wiring mate, heres a picture to explain it

Cheers adam, think it's the random olde-style sheath on the cables that's put me off, the 3 reds are in a black almost fabric looking sheath, must be ancient!

If the sheath is black, then almost certainly its VIR (vulcanised India Rubber)... gernally speaking it has a shelf life of about 40 years max... the bad news is that it stopped being installed in the late 1950's AFAIK :o, best not desturb it too much, as its likely to crumble apart, especially at terminations where the inner core are exposed to the air.

Best get a sparks to do a perioidic on the place if its yours, and probably budget for a rewire :(
