My PC powers up but no longer displays on the monitor (the monitor and cables are fine) and is unusable. Luckily, I backed up everything shortly before the problem - except for one Word file - which represents about 4 hours' work. Is there any quick or easy way I can access the PC's HD from my laptop to grab that single file?

Thanks for any input!

It would depend on the drive, laptop drives you can get the adaptor for as mentioned above but if it's a full sized desktop hdd you would need to make sure the above adaptor supports the larger size drives and it has a mains power cable.

The adaptor is the only way without connecting it internally to another pc.

It's also worth noting that almost all of these are made in China and are aimed to work with 3.5" drives that draw around 0.5A from the 12v rail, if you try and hook up one of the Maxtor beasts that draw 1.3A then you will be smelling burnt electronics for days.
