Old man seeks help re Windows!

I have already posted something but now cannot find it! That gives you some idea of my age. Anyway, my question.
I have Windows XP. Normally this system allows you to programme in a user name and password for outside sites. Sometimes for whatever reason my system no longer carries the user name and password. In these circumstances I have to type in each time. Is there any way that I can programme in the user name and password.
Any help appreciated. Many thanks.

I guess you mean websites? If so are you using ie6, ie7 or firefox?

I am afraid I do not understand ie6, ie7 or firefox. When I say sites I think I mean websites. For example, I am studying at the Open University which I go into most days.

Are you using Internet Explorer by Microsoft.

Or Firefox by Mozilla?

On Internet Explorer:

Click Tools Menu
Click Internet Options
Click on the Content Tab
On the Autocomplete line click on Settings
Ensure Usernames and Passwords on Forms is ticked and Prompt to Save password is ticked
Click OK
Click Apply
Click OK
