Gigabyte Z97X-Gaming 7 - Devils Canyon Core i7 4790K 4.0Ghz CPU

This surprised me

I bought (1) for the build , my oversight - heat sinks were too tall for the cpu cooler fan and would only fit in Channel B offsetting the fan outside the case.
took some old memory from a water cooled rig (2)
here are the results from passmark

(1) TeamGroup Xtreem LV "Frost Edition" 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-21300C11 2666MHz Dual Channel Kit = 1782 pass mark

16GB , Team Group Inc. Xtreem-LV-2666

(2) Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz = 2701 pass mark

Go into bios and enable XMP profile for the ram, this will set the correct speed, timings and voltage. On z8/97 memory defaults to 1333mhz.

Kingston is working well and I can close the case. I shall check the Xtreem in another rig.

Bios -

multiplier 13.33 -14
MHz 1400
ran both sets on this setting and passmarks as given above.

set to 16 1600mhz now for Kingston till I can get low profile DDR3
thanks for the input
