yo,

I have a gigabyte GA-965P-DS3P motherboard and because of money issues I just want to upgrade my cpu, graphics card and ram. I was considering getting a q6700 but I don't understand what it says on the gigabyte page about compatibility, in the column where it's supposed to say the compatibility it says "F5".. I don't know what that means and haven't been able to find an explaination.

really all I need to know is if a q6700 would work with my motherboard.
If not, I want to get the next best thing that will work.

any help would be appreciated.

x

That means which BIOS revision is needed to run that cpu, any BIOS rev above F5 will mean your cpu will work.

As said, you need to update your BIOS. going by what you said, your understanding seems a bit lacking in PC hardware? (not meant to be rude btw) If so, i suggest you get someone in the know to flash it for you or else you might end up with a paperweight.

The Gigabyte 965-DS3 has DualBios to stop the paperweight scenario i.e. when you flash you only flash half the chip leaving the other half with the original version. So flash to F12 and enjoy!

PS I've recently updated my 965-DS4 and bought an OEM Q6700.

I was going to actually that I did it earlier and it was totally uneventful, had no problems what so ever.
justintime was pretty much on the money though, I'm not big on PC hardware and don't know a whole lot about it which is why I ask questions on this ere forum :-) In time I'm sure I'll learn more about it.
I ordered the q6700 earlier so I'm looking forward to installing it problem free (I hope).

btw, cheers for your quick useful help RJC.

Yep, and i've seen a few dead DS3s and 4s after a bad flash in my day, recovery method was futile. Dual BIOS is not 100% effective though it does help.
