Crysis.

Back in the day when i had a 9600GT and a P4 930 i bought and struggled to play this game so i ended up selling it on EBay.

... now about 4 years on i thought I'd give the game another chance so I bought it on STEAM. I thought with my 6 core CPU and AMD's fastest graphics card i would finally be able to play the game on maximum settings at 60 FPS+ ... but boy was i wrong! With everything maxed out I'm only getting 20-30 FPS on DX10 settings and 20-40 FPS on the DX9 setting. The game gets very laggy at times.

Which begs the question .. why exactly was this game released in 2007 when (i guess) no system could actually play it as it was meant to be played?

So that people with what were then new systems could rage and whinge and cry when the game didn't run at 60fps. One of the best all time trolls by a game developer.

Well Crytek did say that they wanted the game to scale with GPU's for the next 5 years when it was released and it looks like they got their wish, it's still one of the most graphically impressive games today, if I remember at the time Crytek were also saying that the low settings in Crysis were supposed to be comparable to Farcry's max settings, not sure I agree though, I think they expected us to play the game on the lowest settings and up our settings over the years as we upgrade our GPU's but as we all know PC users find it hard to play games on anything but maxed out settings :p, I remember at the time I had an 8800gtx and I ended up playing the whole game through on max settings @ 1024x768 with no AA and it still slowed right down in some busy areas.

I've got to admit that when the DX10 version runs smooth at max settings the game is looks and plays beautiful, but i still wonder why they released it when they knew no-one could play it at the time ... even 4 years on.

I believe that was the point though. It was the benchmark, and it still is.

It's odd you say this, I've been playing it for the past few days and I haven't experienced one slow down. Runs like a peach, although I haven't been looking at FPS.

The trouble with keep checking the FPS 20FPS seems low compared to other games where people were always FPS concious like Quake and Counter-Strike - I believe the issue with these games is that FPS limited netcode updates as well, hence them playing like crap with low FPS.

Ignore the FPS figures and just play, I don't see any reason why you should have any issues if I do not (Very high everything, 4xAA @ 1920x1200).

Are you using AA? If so, switch it off and use the edge_AA = 2 command. If not, I'm not sure why your gameplay is laggy. I wouldn't pay too much attention to actual fps, but rely on the experience of play itself. (That said, my own DX9 and DX10 benchmarking suggests there is very little between them now - patches have improved the performance of DX10, except in the last level which is buggy in DX10.)

I was running it on a mix of High and Very high with my single 5850 at stock, with a CPU weaker than yours, and enjoying a perfectly playable game. I didn't notice any slowdowns - there was a little at the start of the assault level. I hadn't reached the snow level though.

I upgraded to 2 5850s and took all settings to very high, put a few demanding graphical mods, and again, perfectly fine, though I had to switch from DX10 to DX9 in the buggy last level.

It was released so that it could scale up with better hardware. If you read their press releases at the time this was pretty obvious. Crytek did a fantastic job, they created a gorgeous looking game at Medium settings which you could play in 2007, which would also convert into an amazing looking game as you upgraded your hardware and upped the settings.

"as it was meant to be played" is also quite subjective. The reality is that one could argue:

In 2007 'it was meant to be played' on Medium Settings
In 2009 'it was meant to be played' on High Settings
In 2011 'it was meant to be played' on Very High Settings

I remember at the time I had an 8800gtx and I ended up playing the whole game through on max settings @ 1024x768 with no AA and it still slowed right down in some busy areas.
I completed it back in 2007 using a single 8800gtx at 1920x1200.........
Remember seeing it drop to below 10fps a few times in the later levels :p

:D Now I can play it at 1920x1200 / 8xAA / 16xAF / max details settings / at 80fps :D

Success of Far Cry made crytek more ambitious :p

Are you playing on vanilla very high settings? If so: get yourself a custom config! It will improve performance and visuals too.

Crysis at around 30fps is very smooth for me. 20 is perfectly playable, but not quite smooth.

Don't know what you mean, my 8800gt can max it on 1680x1050 with everything max bar the AA.
