old pc making sounds

my old pc being a bit wierd recently, first of all about a week ago the dvd write went bonckers, i tried to burn a cd and it had errors and wouldnt make an audio cd. so today i go to replace the dvdrw drive with one from this rig, and i turn off power at plug, change drives, plug all correct leads in, so i go to turn it on and i get a long beep, about 5 seconds from the motherboard speaker, nothing comes up, no bios no nothing, it just keeps doing these 5 second beeps, can anybody help and let me know wots going on or *** i should do? i put thhe old drive back in and it does the same. HELP!!!!!!!! :eek:

long beeps usually mean a problem with the RAM (correct if wrong) disconnect, then re-connect the RAM, and then tell us what happens

look in the manual for the board and see what the beep code you describe relates to (it will be quite specific).

Try 1 memory stick at a time and see if the pc boots. If one stick has died this will show which one is duff.

yea got it srry for delay in update, the case is realy small and some wires pushed the ram socket leaver open and it wasnt in properly, its back in and all works as usual, just my dvdrw wont work, i think thats just bust tho.
